Should beater ships exist?

Discussion

Full disclosure, zero expectations a system like this exists in game. But regardless, does anyone think it would be interesting to have a mostly functional “beater” ship that needs to be repaired or have modules replaced to have full function? Thinking something similar to the Millennium Falcon’s hyperdrive always breaking down in combat making escape impossible. I think it’s probably a little silly if all of the ships we get access to are in perfect condition and don’t require maintenance.

I hope there is a cool cockpit explosion cutscene if you get smoked

I’m sure durability is a feature in ship combat and maintenance, to which case if you just refuse to repair your ship, it could be considered a “beater”.

Assuming minor ship repairs can be done away from major ship ports, I was thinking that we might get some permanently damaged modules that are repair locked (e.g. max repair of 50-75% or something like that) and that just need to be replaced completely to be fully functional.

I could see something like this but expect it to be “gamified” so that it does not become burdensome to players if it’s present. Based upon n what the devs have said this seems to be their overall philosophy. Basically I doubt they will let your ship become so damaged you can’t afford to fix it and therefore are stuck somewhere. Honestly I’d be willing to bet your ship is automatically repaired somewhat upon landings.

Maybe only non vital systems can become damaged. IDK, hard to tell where they’d draw a line

I'd be willing to place money on minor repairs being made for free out of concern for other pilots and passengers, similar to airport ground crews making small repairs without billing the airline

I would agree ship durability should be a thing, because I like the roleplaying aspect of keeping your equipment in good condition or dealing with subpar results. It helps the early game progression when you go from using second-rate items to save money to being able to maintain everything without issue. But then I remember how many people praised the removal of weapon durability in Skyrim and Fallout 4... likely the same people that need a survival mode where you starve every 3 hours without a snack and need a sip of water on the hour, whilst freezing to death in the northern realms.

Yes, I'm being a bit facetious. I'm just in awe at how so many people want survival simulation needs but balk at gear durability as being "annoying."

I agree with what you’re saying. Some upkeep is totally fine and honestly would have helped with Skyrim’s gold accumulation problem by having somewhere to sink it. Food and drink starts to be a bit cumbersome for me in these games with carry weight. I think ship fuel, maintenance (damage repairs), and ammo all should be there and aren’t huge barriers to fluid gameplay. I’m sure we’ll get mods that add a requirement for supply rations for crew and such. Even a generic “crew supplies” resource to stock would be fine.

I think the starting ship will function like that. To quote Todd "it just works" meaning it won't do anything fancy. However over time you can upgrade the ship and add the modules that add more quality of life.

I’d love to be able to find derelict or crashed ships that need some repairs before you can claim them as your own. I guess that would require some kind of durability system, or maybe it would just work as a research project or mini side quest.

yeah degradation and engineering or manually fixing our ships would be really cool. Mods or DLC down the road if we are lucky...as we are not getting thee feature at launch but could be added if game does well.

I suppose you could mod in some ship parts with an "unreliable" modifier. Have it add a script that checks daily to see if the part develops a part and then have it fail the next time it saw heavy use.

Probably. I'd need to look at how ship systems worked in the CK.

Bare minimum is cockpit, gravdrive and landing engines so you could make a pretty barebones ship if you wanted.

Excited to see what creations we can make. Just load up a few dozen cargo containers, or drop in an oversized grav drive into a small ship and jump like 100LY away lol
