Companies that use the default iPhone alarm sound in their MVs should be sued for emotional damage

Discussion

Maybe I'm just particularly sensitive towards this and I'm the only one, but hearing that iPhone default alarm sound instantly triggers this anxiety in me.

It brings up this feeling that I'm late for work and have to get ready. Except I'm ALREADY AT WORK. I have no idea why people keep adding that sound to MVs when it really doesn't add anything.

The two main culprits for this that I can think of right now are:

Although I know there are other examples out there..

It's not an issue when listening to the songs on Spotify but I still tend to do a large part of my music listening through YouTube music MVs. And it annoys me so much.

Anyone else running into the same issue I am having? Or other little pet peeves in MVs that takes you out of it?

Oh I can physically feel my heart rate spike whenever I hear the default alarm in a music video. I actually changed mine years ago but I used it for long enough in college that it still gives me a real jolt. I don’t like it at all 😑.

Alarm PTSD lasts forever..

Back in highschool I used to have songs as alarm. And to this day I can't really listen to those songs anymore.

the siren sounds in stray kids' songs while driving?? 😭🤚

Maybe unpopular opinion but I love when songs have sirens in them. My brain is so broken that I genuinely enjoy the abrasive and dissonant elements mixed in lol

It sounds great overall when done right, but the point is when driving you NEED to pay attention to sirens so the sound effect in songs makes you instantly stressed and paranoid. Like WHERE is the AMBULANCE

i’m pretty sure case 143 has a short moment where it sounds like a police siren is going by and the first time i played that song in my car i started getting over into the right lane and off the road

Was just thinking about this. 😰

Mine’s a little bit more a song problem than just MVs, I have misophonia and really any mouth noise, whistle, or similar sort high pitched noises literally makes me feel the bad anger kinda shiver down my spine and nauseous and my shoulder immediately at my ears.

Some of the songs off the top of my head that I can’t listen to:

Whistle by blackpink

Butterfly by loona

Icy by itzy

Bon bon chocolate by everglow

Sticker by nct 127

Secret story of the swan by izone

Gashina by sunmi

Wee woo by pristin

Charmer by stray kids

Illusion by aespa (it’s one of the worst offenders in terms of mouth noise with the shudders licking noise but I’ve managed to push through a couple of times a month bc it’s that good of a song)

Oh my god by Gidle (it’s worse on my ears than illusion)

A lot of taemin songs unfortunately

That’s like, a playlist of some of my favorite songs lol. I feel for you that’s a bummer

37

It’s unfortunate bc I know that most of these are fan favorites but I literally can’t listen to them even enough to judge if I really like them or not. Every single time there’s like a ranking list of discography or songs I always have to put them at the bottom with the disclaimer “I can see the appeal but it’s just not for me.”

(I also know butterfly is an absolutely gorgeous song and performance which is a super bummer)

I mean I get it. I find it viscerally distressing when someone scrapes their teeth across their fork when they eat, I can imagine that if a song tossed that sound in every few seconds, it would be unbearable for me to listen to no matter good the rest of the song was.

10

Ugh teeth scrapers 🤮 straight to jail, do not pass go

Holy shit I have the same issues with high pitch sounds but I didn’t know it was an actual condition I thought it was just me 😂

I feel a little lightheaded when I hear it and the PTSD from waking up at 3 am to go to work creeps up on me

I love Daydream by J-Hope but it hurts so much to listen to because it has the same beeping noise as my alarm.

A couple of years ago I set my ringtone to the chorus of Red Velvet’s Psycho. Then I got additional work related responsibilities that led to me getting calls in the middle of the night. And by middle of the night, I’m not talking 10 or 11 PM- I’m talking 3 or 4 in the morning.

Suffice it to say that song became an automatic skip for several months, even though I loved it before that. The “ah ah-ah ah-ah-ah” leading into the chorus still gives me PTSD.

I haven’t set a song as my alarm since I made Payphone by Maroon5 my alarm the summer after it came out. I learned it gets old real quick lol. I had it play from the beginning so anytime I heard the “I’m at a-“ I skipped it after that.

9

This happened to me way back. Not a KPop song, but JPop ones that I really loved. I set one of the artist’s songs as my alarm and another as a ringtone. Didn’t help that I was in a bad place back then, too, so the negative association went on for years ;(

flatlander3•

Yeah, I try to change the song every day for precisely this reason.

I made Fire instrumental (by BTS) my ringtone and to this day I can't listen to that song normally 💀💀

If someone wants to hate their favorite song this is the best way lol

Ugh similar issue with Ateez, they use a few sound effects in their songs that sound like the warning alarms in my car. I’ll be driving along and the back up sensor noise

11
sunmi_siren•

LOL no you're right I hate when tv shows/movies do it too, it triggers my fight or flight mode

I have never used the default alarm sound on my phone, so no. I either pick a different one or use a song, even then hearing those sounds out of context no it doesn’t bother me. For example my wake up alarm every day is “Everybody” by SHINee and it has never diminished my love for hearing the song other times.

The closest comparison I can think of is the first time I listened to “You and I” by Dreamcatcher I thought someone was at my front door because it was the exact same doorbell song. I fully paused the song, got up and walked to the door, opened it to find nobody there. It wasn’t until I listened to the song again later and heard the doorbell again that I even realized I’d been accidentally tricked lmao

The squeaky windshield wiper noise in SHINee's "Don't Call Me". Do I love that song? Yes. Did I look around frantically for a while when I first played it in the car during a rainstorm? Also yes.

I made NCT's Favourite my alarm clock 'cus I loved the song and thought it was very soothing, safe to say I can barely stand it anymore and even removed it from my playlist as I keep mistaking it as my alarm going off

3

TXT’s Your Light uses the Facebook Messenger default “pop-ding” alert in its intro and I hate it 💀 Really alarmed me one time as I always have my phone on silent. Song’s still a bop tho, specially the JP version.

Any song with a siren in it.

flatlander3•

I don't like it when the song is muted or interrupted midway through the MV (I'll give that scene in Sweet Crazy Love a pass but that's about it). If there's something like that, it'll probably lead to me listening to the MV much less than I would otherwise.

It doesn't really offend or upset me like most of the examples given here, just annoys me because I want to hear the whole song in one go!

Also sound effects over the MV are a no-go, it's not that common but they really overdid it with Kang Daniel's SOS (good song though, I just never watched the MV again).

3
Shot_Machine_1024•

Pretty sure that this feeling/issue is the point. It's something I've seen on TikTok and Instgram reels too but with the Discord pinging sound. I'm confident the strategy is to use a background noise which we have all been condition to wake up to and be immediately alert. The alertness makes whatever you're watching more likely to be imprinted in your memory.

Also I am absolutely annoyed with the Discord ping trend in those videos.

love options by bestie having siren sounds

A few years ago my friend was driving myself and another friend during a vacation, she let me have the aux cord, I played this song unthinkingly... you can see where this is going.

Ever since then I'll usually put up my windows during the siren parts just in case other drivers don't get alarmed. I feel like this is the kind of thing that only seems like a good idea if you live somewhere like Seoul where you can get by with mass transit!

3
sad-dog-hours•

omg thats so funny HAHAH im gonna start putting my windows up now 😭

2

Same with sirens in songs! The worst offender for me is Stray Kids--I love blasting their music in the car, but it always triggers my anxiety when I hear that police siren. I instinctually always hit the brakes, even when I'm not speeding lol

The gunshots in The Leaders by Ateez… scares the shit out of me every time

Click/Han River by Mino - it has a flurry of notification sounds and it gets me looking for my phone every time even though I have heard the song 100s of times.
