I saw this and I was like "holy shit is that a nl 2025 reference" like it's so funny how the instant I saw the words Rutte I knew who it was .

Is this in reference to the Coalition Government collapsing in Holland?

Yes, and on an issue that is relatively unimportant in the storyline created by the modteam. The mod's premise rests on the centrist coaliton of Rutte surviving until the next scheduled election in 2025, but instead Rutte and his VVD alienated the rest of his coalition by taking a hardline stance against migration. D66 was against the limitations in general, while the Christian Union is specifically against the new policy capping the amount of family migrant applications to 200 a year.

This means new elections will happen this year (the BBC article I linked to says it will be in November), and will probably feature immigration, not nitrogen, as the defining issue, as it is what caused the government to break apart.

As one of my favorite mods in the campaign trail, it does make me sad that all the work that went into it was very quickly invalidated, far quicker than they probably expected it would. It could be a blessing in disguise, though; since it was a 2023 look at 2025, it still features a very 2023 outlook on most issues, so it wouldn't be out of the realm of impossibility to use it as a basis for a NL2023 scenario down the line. Some stuff would still need to be changed, however, such as retooling LinksOm into PvdA-GroenLinks (the merger the mod assumed would happen just hasn't materialized yet, but unless something catastrophic happens they're probably still going to run this election on a dual ticket), and probably reducing Pieter Omtzigt's role in the story (I don't think he's made any indication of seeking leadership as of now). But the recent decision to add D66 and PVV recently was definitely the right call in retrospect; they're going to be more relevant due to the situation in which the election was called than I think the modmakers intended. Hell, the CU could probably stand to have a path in a hypothetical NL2023 at this rate, given their central role in the breakdown of the cabinet.

CU has been at 5 seats for the past 4 elections. They have a very stable base of support.

I thougth that Rutte was liberal on at least most issues, suprised that he was a hardliner on immigration.

1

He’s hardly a hardliner, his policy is common sense to most Dutch people in todays climate.

So, who might become the new PM?

This should be pretty interesting. Right now, it's looking like a 3 way race between BBB, VVD, and PvdA-GL (Assuming they do the joint list). Hell, with the new focus on immigration, maybe even the PVV could make a comeback.

Always thought making mods about any future election was stupid, I like having my priors confirmed.

I'm guessing right now there'll be a BBB-VVD-CDA-JA21 Cabinet after this election.
