My mouse is getting old :(
So as the title says, my mouse is getting old. I got her, Freya, and her sister Selene a little over 2 years ago. Selene passed after a year unexpectedly. Freya is roughly 2.5 years old now, she’s lived a long spoiled life. When Selene passed, we got Freya a new companion named Loki. Loki is skittish. She wouldn’t let Freya within 3 inches of her at first. But when she did, they bonded fast. They have a massive cage to the two of them, and lots of clutter.
My concern is that Freya won’t live much longer. She’s healthy, but has been sleeping longer and has been taking longer to come interact with us. She doesn’t run anymore, despite having three wheels. I think we should get more mice now. So that way Loki has a chance to bond with them with Freya present for support. Freya is a sweetheart and very friendly. I’m just worried Loki won’t cope well without Freya and giving her new friends without Freya will stress her out a lot. What do you guys think? Should we get another pair of mice before or after Freya passes? Or would it stress her out too much? I fear Freyas last day is approaching quickly…
Update: So I decided to get a couple more mice. I ended up getting a litter (is that what it’s called?) of 6. They are ~3 weeks old and so teeny. So now I have 8 girls. I put the babies and Freya in the box together. They have a water bottle and plenty of food. There was some squabbles at first, and I think Freya has declared she is the alpha and the babies are cool with that. Then I added Loki. Loki is absolutely terrified of the babies. They approach and she squeals and runs. When she realized Freya was snuggling with them she started calming down and likes to lay on them. After awhile of no squabbles I added one hide at a time, and they have three in there right now. They also have the saucer wheel in there.
The new girls are Aphrodite, Luna, Avery, Ivy, Suki, and Reign. They are super sweet and Aphrodite likes to climb on Freya. I’ll try adding more stuff soon and we’ll see how they all handle it
