I like how the carricature didn't even try to include Scotland and Ireland in the fun as part of John Bull. Just plain old Anglo-French rivalry.
France is into it
(Sus)sex
I work at a local museum, and had a long while to read through the little library there. Found a book of caricatures from the start of the 20th century and had a decent time leafing through it recently.
Should have sent it first, goddamn.
Oh well. I also have Napoleon being suave.
I feel like the artist did the counties of Wales, then just said fuck it when he came to drawing England. Obviously Bristol is Hampshire right?
What time period would this have been?
England
Can’t give an actual time period but it’s anywhere between 1284 and 1707.
Wales was annexed into England (Wales is included in this map) in 1284, and Scotland and England unified to form Great Britain in 1707 via the Acts of Union 1707
In fact it was published th 5th of November 1793. It is written on the bottom left.
It also pictures His Royal Majesty Georgie the III. (sauce in German)
It's hilarious that they can draw him shitting out a navy and pass it off as state propaganda.
Also found an official record of the caricature:
This crude caricature was published when the possibility of French invasion was feared. George III, identified in the title as John Bull, is caricatured as a map of England. He repels the invading French fleet with a vigorous discharge of excrement. Given the print's theme it may be significant that Pontefract is the only identified inland English town. Pontefract was famous for the manufacture of liquorice, used as a laxative.
Well given Georges mental health at the end of his life. I'm pretty sure shitting on the Channel was possibly one of his hobby. Is it a carricature of James Gillray ?
