I need help on how to texture things in Blender

So, I'm still fairly new to Blender, and I'm currently making models for a game. However, it has come to my attention that my abilities to texture... anything, are nonexistent. I'm not asking for someone to do this for me, but I am asking if anyone can help me understand how to do this. So far, my brain has exploded on textures at least twice.
