Weapon Types vs Enemies

According to the fandom wiki, Scythes give extra damage to Undead. However, it felt to me that pistols were incredibly effective against Iron Golems.

Are particular weapons more effective against specific enemy types? And just as importantly, against V Blood enemies?

I typically carry most weapons with me when out and about in case I need to harvest something, but it may be worthwhile to change your weapon type depending on what you're fighting.
