How does 8088 Offset Segment Address thingy work?

I know there’s 5 different register and that they get added in the ALU to get to the 20 bit address. However I don’t understand how or why is there a need for a Code segment or data segment register. Also the PC is also only 16bit wide, so which register will it do the offset with?
