Am I wrong for not wanting my brother at my wedding?

I’m (27F) getting married next year to my fiancé (26M) and we’re discussing the guest list. Our wedding is going to be pretty small. I have 12 siblings and grew up with 2 of them. the brother in question I never talked to until he found me on social media when i was about 14 or 15. At the time, he was an addict and nobody really ever seen or heard from him, like ever. So it wasn’t surprising to me that we weren’t close. I have no idea of his exact age but i wanna say late 30s. About 7ish years ago he turned his life around and got “Sober” (stopped shooting up but still drinks/smokes weed/ self medicates using mushrooms) for his Gf, who also quit her addictions, and their children. We’ve only seen each other a handful of times since reconnecting, but they haven’t all been pleasant. Besides the fact that he’s constantly talking down on me and dismissing my voice, he and his wife are also extremely transphobic and homophobic (i’m non-binary and pansexual), and they’re also racist af (made that clear at our sisters wedding when she married a man of a different race). Our Dad recently went through a health crisis and moved in with them. He paid the rent in full, most utilities, and brought all of his belongings for the family to use (TV, appliances, a $1000 computer i got him, etc). They helped take care of him and nurse him back to health… For a couple months. It didn’t take long for the using to begin. Using his car, emotionally manipulating him for more and more money, and essentially bleeding him dry. It’s worth noting that he also gave our dad a kidney so like, dad has a hard time saying no to them. But while dad was living there he said it’s the most toxic hellhole he’s ever been in. Apparently they’re both drinking by the 5th every night, fighting horrendously, and screaming and emotionally abusing the kids. In fact, brothers wife’s oldest daughter refuses to come back from her dads house because of how bad it is there.

Dad moved out, and is good now.

So that brings us to recent events. Dad went to go retrieve some of his personal belongings from Brother, only to find that they had sold/pawned most of his belongings and threw the rest away. He also called me “Fucking scum” over a meme shared on facebook.

After hearing about what they did to our dad, My fiancé says he doesn’t want them there. Quite frankly I don’t either but I do want my nephews there.

All this has made me choose not to invite him. Am I wrong?

Remove the family connection and say it was just a family friend. How would you proceed?

There’s your answer.

Quite honestly I don't blame you. My siblings aren't addicts but my brother is quite politically loud and my sister is an insufferable bitch. My mom is abusive to me. So I invited none of them to my wedding.

Nta but you may not be able to have your nephews there either (depending on ages) because "if they come I come" mentality

yuppppp that’s how i think it’s gonna go. makes me sad. :(

He sounds like a terrible person. NTA and I hope you're able to keep him out of your life moving forward.

It's your wedding. He's insulted you, he's a bigot, you have absolutely no reason to maintain contact of any kind with him.

You are not wrong for not inviting him. Quite frankly I'd block him on everything and never have any kind of contact with him again. If possible, maintain contact with your nephews through text/chat/whatever that the parents don't have access to, but make it very clear that you do not want contact with their parents.

Literally my nephews are the only reason i haven’t. one of them is only 7, he’s too little to have a phone or socials. I’m also pretty sure they’re telling their kids all the worst stuff about me, which sucks SO much. I just hope they will grow up to know their parents opinions are… what they are. 😭

I'm sure they're already learning what kind of people their parents are. Hopefully as they get older they'll distance themselves from those monsters, and they'll remember that you were someone safe to talk to.

i’ve tried to make it known that i’ll always be a safe space for them.

I have a similar issue with wanting nothing to do with my brother but i am open for my nephews. Maybe when they grow up we can connect but looking after myself means i need to deal with the consequence of cutting my brother from my life. Congrats on your wedding!

thank you!

thank you for the validation. 💕

The kids probably dread the thought of their dad embarrassing them and hurting you at your wedding. You can make healthy boundaries to protect yourself and your new family, and be supportive of the kids. Congrats

thank you! and you right tbh. the oldest is old enough to be aware.

I'd invite the kids but not them.

Nope. It’s your wedding. You get to choose who’s invited or not.

1

No, you’re not wrong. This is your special day, don’t let some moron ruin it regardless of what they’re connection to you is. IMO connections are determined by our actions, not genetics

Not wrong at all! They aren't close to you at all.

You are not wrong.

Nothing you described is someone you want or should have around you, especially on an important event like a wedding.

Why would he even want to coke unless for free food and booze. He would cause a scene and ruin the day. It’s your day, invite who you want who will make the day lovely.

There is no question here. You are not wrong, your “brother” can sit on the sidelines concerning your life!

You aren’t remotely wrong. Why would you want him there and who would expect you to??

Honestly? Idk. You’re right. I just fought so hard to have him in my life, it feels wrong? i guess? idk. idk!! lol I think my extended family expects him to be there but. my dad doesn’t 🤷‍♀️

I wanted my nieces at my wedding, but they were too young to come without their mother (my sister) so, of course she had to come too. She totally ruined the whole episode for me; told my friends (our hosts) that I used to be skinny, but my husband, wined and dined me and made me fat. Not true, I was chubby already when I met him. She said I chose an older man because I couldn’t get one my age. Also not true, I’ve always dated men of many different ages-and many more than she dated. Because she had a baby at 19. She said I used to babysit for her, but I stopped when I met him. Also, not true, I continue babysitting (always for free) for many more years, until she told me that I was “no longer needed” because her oldest was old enough to babysit her 3 younger kids (oldest was 11). After which we stopped being invited to family events. She basically made the whole trip about her, which is exactly what I had feared. When I pulled the attention back to me - which was hard for me, as she’d always demanded to be the center at attention - she got depressed and faked an illness to get out of any other activities. Which was the best part of the trip! Still, my memory of my own wedding is not joyful because of her. Also, when our mother died, my father started dating 4 months later, so she cut him out of her (and his 4 grandchildren’s) lives because he didn’t mourn ‘properly’. Which led him into a deep depression. I regret letting her invade my wedding. Oh, and she calls herself a Christian.

You’re not wrong and have someone watching the door at your wedding in case he insists on showing up and causing trouble

1
adavidmiller•

lol no. Has anyone even suggested you're wrong.

If you'd stopped your story at "we weren't close", you'd still not be wrong. It's your wedding you're not obligated to invite anyone, nevermind people you're not close to.

The fact that they're shitty people is just a bonus and reminder that you should have as little to do with them as possible.

Good Lord, no! Absolutely NTA. Why would you want that vile p.o.s. at your wedding?

1
Steddie-Eddie•

I’d cut all ties altogether. His presence there will only bring a negative energy to your wedding.

INFO How on earth was someone with a long history and ongoing use of drugs ever cleared to donate a kidney to anyone?

I'd say your wedding, you pick the guests, but I question this being a real situation based on the fact that I have a hard time believing any legitimate medical facility would have done this transplant.

1
sadakaraOP•

ngl i said the same thing when they did it!! i was like “uh, you know how much heroin has been through that kidney, right?”

But he was in good health despite the drugs and his kidneys were in great condition somehow. And since he was a match, and my dad had months left, there wasn’t even a second thought when he said yes.

it’s real, i promise. i find it funny that my life is that unbelievable tho 💀

"Needs must when the devil drives!" NTA and I hope your wedding goes successfully.

It’s your wedding. Do note there are consequences to your choices.

There’s something called “being the bigger person” but you’ll not find that in the dog pile here.

I’d like to promote “being the bigger person” and having adult direct conversations aimed at resolution. But it’s your wedding. And note you can invite him here to give his side and partake in the convo versus giving us one side.

my brother barely has facebook i don’t think he knows what reddit is 💀
