Doing Some Big Data Research on Artist Support and Discussion Communities
Hey everyone, I'm a researcher at the University of Colorado who's looking at support communities for artists like r/ArtistLounge and the influence of social media platforms on people's creative processes.
I was curious as to what all folks seem to talk about in this community as I've been lurking and commenting some in here for a while now, so I pulled up an archive of this community (from here: https://the-eye.eu/redarcs/) and did a bit of topic modeling on the subreddit and wanted to share some analysis with y'all in the spirit of transparency. This is going to be written up in prose form, but I'm more than willing to share my results with folks in DMs.
- Folks here discuss their chosen mediums at length here, and the mediums range from paints (e.g., oils, watercolors), to drawing mediums like ink and charcoal. This also extends to digital mediums, like photoshop, procreate, and tips and tricks for how to find free brushes tools to how to navigate these tools, and what tools are worth acquiring.
- Another huge topic of discussion is that of time -- this is of particular interest to me, as art is a time-consuming practice in both the acquisition of skills (see previous bullet) and in the act of creation itself. This overlaps with many positive statements such as 'good', while also emphasizing that art is work that takes time.
- Coupled with this is a topic specifically around selling art, and how to manage/get commissions, where to order prints, and how much to charge for them. This category also includes the keywords 'work' and 'free' -- which suggests a tension between the desire to sell art, and the way creative work is undervalued by both artists and other people.
- Finally, there's a lot of discussion on using social media to share art -- particular platforms that get talked about are Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram, and -- surprisingly -- deviantART and Wikipedia. Note the lack of discussion of TikTok or any of the more niche art platforms.
I will say that some of this stuff may seem obvious, especially as a long time poster or lurker here, but I still think it's helpful to see this and to, more importantly, see what's missing -- particularly notable is any discussion of AI Art or algorithms generally (either for art content recommendation or art being taken down), despite my thinking these were really relevant and salient topic of conversation here. Another notable gap is that of any discussion burnout, art block, and creative drive, despite the fact that these are topics that are discussed here frequently (and ones I'm interested in for my research).
I'm happy to discuss more in the comments or privately, and, as I said, very willing to share my data as well. I'm pairing this analysis with interviews as well and want to thank the folks I've spoken to from here who already post and would love to hear more about other people's experiences.
