AITA for making my friendship with my roommate difficult because I fell for her?
(25F)I'll begin by saying I know it's dumb to fall for your roommate. It just happened.
I have been living with this girl in a flatshare for about an year now. When we first moved in to our flat and I began to know more about her and be friends with her,I had a feeling I'd end up liking her. You know like how sometimes you meet someone and they have everything that you ever wanted in a person, just like that.
But at the same time I knew this was wrong, so I tried to suppress my feelings for her as long as I could. I tried to maintain distance from her, to interact with her much etc. But she is genuinely nice and it's impossible to not be friendly with her.
And then one day(2mos after moving in) she told me she was Bi. This led me into thinking what if the liking was mutual, but still I kept it to myself for obvious reasons. Now here I want to let the readers know that moving out of the flat before completing one year wasn't really an option for me(I don't wanna give away too many details but the situation is such).
After about 7-8 months, one day we were talking and I just blurted it out. I asked her if she would like to go on a date with me. She said no. I was like okay fine, I respect your decision. And tbh I wanted to talk to her about it, just so I could ensure there was no miscommunication and things were clear on both sides.
I didn't want her to be uncomfortable around me. But she showed no signs of it, she kept acting as if that conversation never happened and we were friends(we're friends ofc but I believe we need to acknowledge the elephant in the room).
And after this incident, I felt like she was trying harder to be my friend? Like she would text me if something good happened in her day, send me pictures of her brother's dogs(cuz I love dogs) etc. And it's not like we are super close friends or anything like that.
So anyway, I was just confused about the situation but I assumed she wanted to stay just friends and I was okay with that. I have to be honest here, I do enjoy her company a lot, she's very fun to be around. But then one day about a month ago, she was telling us(all 5 flatmates) the story of how she asked someone out in a pub and now they were going out on a date 3 days later.
And it stabbed my chest like anything. It felt like she was rubbing it in my face. I mean if you wanted to be my friend and you knew I was kinda interested in you(because I asked you out once), then why would you come tell me you are pursuing other people, it is just very insensitive.
I would have never done such a thing if I was in her place. I am not saying she owes my something just cuz I liked her. My point is why does she have to tell me she was going out with someone else. Do whatever you like, just don't rub it in my face. And after this incident, I gathered all the courage I had and told her not to give me any of her love life updates, cuz it made me uncomfortable. And after this conversation things have been a little awkward, AITA?
