Necro a more varied experience than lock for evil magic user

My go-to is always an evil magic user named after a black metal band/musician. Fiend warlock seemed the obvious choice. In the beta, however, my reliance on Eldritch blast made me feel more like a magical archer than demonically-inclined slinger of curses. I’m wondering if wizard with necro subclass will give a similar fantasy but with more varied combat?
