Asian parents create bad relationship with education
I’d rather kids see education as a good thing and not a chore. I think it would be great to see kids have a genuine appreciation for school and having them get a question right should excite them. “Like wow, I actually got it”. However Asian parents don’t look at things from a long term perspective and want instant results. Whether your parents treat school like a baby sitting factory or the Olympics for academics, it gives off the wrong message. That school is a chore. That school is just stuff you memorize for a test and dump out after you’re done. Then your parents think that the habit of memorizing information temporarily means your smart. Then all of a sudden, you forget and it’s your fault. It’s not, it’s because they treat education in a negative light just as any of us would. This is proof that good grades aren’t really a indicator of success because now your relationship with education is messed up. I wish instead of having us force fed school, they gave positive reinforcement. They let us know why it’s important. There were times where I wished I had paid attention in school and try to enjoy the journey because when I took the ASVAB, I realize all that I have forgotten. My parents sent me to school because they didn’t want to put any effort into teaching me anything. They wanted me to pass at least and then I ended up becoming careless. Suddenly they were surprised that I developed no work ethic. I never took school seriously and now to this day I have bad relationship with math. Instead of looking at it as “hey, baby steps. We got this” to “can’t do that, I’m terrified as hell”. This is a concern because it effects our ability to learn in the long run and it shatters the confidence we need to succeed.
