How does tretinoin help with acne, pigmentation and scars

Hi all, I had severe acne a few years ago for which I got treated but in the last year I've had breakouts again. My dermatologist put me on isotretinoin capsules and a tretinoin cream to be applied on my face. Does it help with my scars as well or is it just to reduce acne?
