just having trouble deciding what is important. Like completing pages in the library for rewards, work on getting legendary heroes (wonder if legendary heroes are still good), buying islands, etc.

Upgrade temples and habitats
Try to get as many mythics as possible
As a new player you have to decide if you are willing to do the surveys/take/buy gems or not. If not just try to get an attacking mythic. That mythic will make quick work of a good bit of adventure mode. Continue to aim for getting more mythics when possible. The difference between mythics an legendaries is so large there is not point in using legendaries, excepts in events/wars/dungeons that require them.
The key f2p or p2w is that first mythic.
There is a massive amount of gold in adventure mode and that mythic will get you the gold you need for more mythic habitats etc. as a new Ayer you are going to find it hard to save up gold for a mythic habitat (skip legendaries for now). Go to the library and complete the easy books like beginner monsters, flying, etc stuff that can be done early on.
The best way to get good mythics is during cell week. During cell week large groups of mythics rotate in the lab. It’s about 200 gems for any given mythic. This isn’t the only way to get mythics but it is the best way to spend gems outside of breeding tree, hatchery upgrades, and builders and importantly it’s not random. You can pick your specific mythic, make a team of three, make offense/defense for PvP whatever you want to do.
It may be a niche thing, but some mythics that are stated by the competitive wiki to be OP tier are only OP if they’re at a higher level than 100, because that’s when they get op abilities. Just wanted to say that.
Im new too but so far completing library pages (the easy ones) have helped me alot and doing the monsterwood surveys and ads too

There’s also another ez one in zoo-smth that give 2m food. You should focus on just grinding and leveling up maybe getting a few early game legendaries
But it depends on how new you are. If you can grind for good mythics than do that
