A noob powergamer's first build

Character Build

Hello everyone o/

My friend introduced Baldur's Gate 3 to me a week ago and I have been hooked since then. As I mentioned in the title I am a powergamer and I played D:OS2 for a couple hundred hours. I have come up with a build ( 'come up' is a bit stretched I basically modified a hexasorcadin build) but as you can imagine I don't know a lot about 5e D&D and my build might be missing something I am not aware of. Can you please push me in the right direction?

  1. Origin - the Dark Urge: Mainly because I heard about the item that gives you invisibility on kills (Death Stalker Mantle) and it doesn't restrict me to any race/class according to this wiki. Also I played enough D:OS2 to know that special paths such as Fane gets a lot more love.

  2. Race - Half Wood Elf: I want +2 CHA/DEX, faster movement and light armor + shield proficeny. I wish we could decouple race bonuses and appearance just like Age of Wonders 4 but I'm sure someone will make a mod for that soon.

  3. Classes Warlock 5/ Paladin 2/Sorcerer 5+ : Warlock is there for unlimited max level Eldritch Blast, pact of blade, thirsting blade, misty step and fly. Most likely will choose the Fiend for temp hit points on kill. Paladin is for some Lay on Hands action, Divine Smite and either Defence or Dueling. My plan is to take the oath of Vengeance simply because it fits thematically and I will not break it by using sneak attacks. Sorcerer will get the rest of my levels (I assume I will install a mod to raise the level cap at some point but let's assume the level cap is 12). My choice is purely based on utility hence I will use my spell slots for either utility spells such as feather fall and sleep or will feed them to Divine Smite or Meta Magic for double EB action. Will go for White Dragon cuz I can save a spell slot if I pick Armour of Agathys.

  4. Ability Score Max CON/Max CHA/Max DEX/Min INT/Min STR/Dump stat WIS: I think stats are pretty self explanatory other than INT. I am planning to grab the circlet for 17 INT asap and I know there's a glove for 17 DEX somewhere but I think it comes pretty late so I will just reset my build when I get it. Also I am glad I don't need 13 STR to pick up Paladin cuz that would be a waste of Ability Scores since I will get my melee damage score from CHA.

  5. Feats War Casting/Mobile/Flex: I am not sure what to pick on as my last feat since Shield Master, Tough, Great Weapon Master, Dungeon Delver, Alert and Defensive Duelist all look good to me. I might be able to take more of them if I increase the level cap or drop Mobile but I really want to be mobile.

As you might see, I am planning on playing a solo mobile gish that can tank if she has to but prefers spiking enemies from afar and disappearing afterwards just to engage again. And if I can't disengage I should be able to Divine Smite my way to victory with all those extra sorcery points I will have. I heard Larian is planning to implement an item system that changes your gameplay drastically so I am keeping my unique 'must have' items to minimum just so I can try different items as I encounter them. All I know is that I will be using a melee item + shield and will use a combination of cloth and leather for armor. Please rip my build apart so that I can fix it before the launch.

Warlock is there for unlimited max level Eldritch Blast

Per tabletop rules, you get max level Eldritch Blast at level 11. (actually 17, but that's far beyond BG3's level cap)

Feats - War Casting/Mobile/Flex

What you need to actually make this build good is ability score increases. Having CHA 20 in the end is pretty much mandatory, and that leaves only 1 feat for something fun.

TurkfireOP•

So I can only get War Casting since I need it to EB while equipping sword and shield. That's good to know.

FPiN9XU3K1IT•

Note that I don't think that Hexblade is actually in the game from day 1 - your build would be considerably weaker if you can't rely on CHA for damage.

1
TurkfireOP•

I don't think they will add Hexblade ever since they give its ability to the pact of blade (using CHA for damage). That's why I need at least Warlock 3. Also thirsting blade gives me an extra attack at Warlock 5 so I might grab it too.

1
FPiN9XU3K1IT•

Ah, I actually missed that!

fishworshipperSORCERER•

I think you can EB with sword and shield without needing War Caster. BG3 doesn't seem to keep track of hand availability at all.

1
TurkfireOP•

So Defensive Duelist is available for me. That is good news for me since without that I would probably die before Act 4.

Sparkasaurusmex•

Hard to say without having all the 5e changes in hand, but even in 5e I'm willing to be you're kinda gimping the character with so many classes. A straight 12 of any of those three classes would probably fair better.

Also note that the racial ability score bonuses are not in the full game. You can choose any race and put the +2, +1 where you want.

1
TurkfireOP•

Also note that the racial ability score bonuses are not in the full game.

What do you mean? Why did they put those abilities to EA if those wont make it to full game?

1
Sparkasaurusmex•

I think it might be a WotC thing. EA was 3 years ago and DnD is changing their racial ability scores

1
AdubuuRogue•

Because the point of EA was to test things and change them? It's a test, not a demo.

Half Wood Elf is kind of whatever for this build. Paladin gets you the proficiencies you need so you're basically taking it for fleet of foot and the stealth proficiency, which are both kind of mediocre when you're building to Eldritch Blast compared to something like gnome.

I'm fine with Sword and Shield Builds, especially on casters, but then there is no reason to take thirsting blade or pact of the blade, as your turn will be eldritch blasting when you're not using slots, the warlock levels are just destroying your metamagic options.

I like the paladin levels cause its a half caster that, if spell progression works the way Larian alluded to, keeps you at the maximum spell progression, but you're not smiting in this build.

2 Paladin/2 Warlock/8 Sorcerer I think works better. You have more sorcery points, you keep the important bits from the two other classes. 2nd Paladin level should come last because it brings the least.

When you make a build you kind of shouldn't build to do damage in two different ways. If you want to Eldritch Blast on your turn, your reaction and likely your bonus action with quicken spell, then why have extra attack?

TurkfireOP•

Paladin gets you the proficiencies you need

To get them I need to pick paladin first. I will pick it last.

there is no reason to take thirsting blade or pact of the blade,

My idea is that if I have to melee I can deal massive damage with smite. And if I can attack twice that's even better. But I will 100% prefer EB over melee.

but you're not smiting in this build.

Why? I get the skill at level 2 and I can fuel it with sorc. What am I missing here?

When you make a build you kind of shouldn't build to do damage in two different ways.

I know. I took 2 level paladin dip just in case if I can't use EB for some reason. As I said I'm a noob and don't know if enemies can shut off my spellcasting one way or another.

I don't see how being a powergamer and shooting yourself in the foot by playing solo are compatible with each other. Isn't the point of powergaming to minmax stuff to an insane level? When it comes to tactical efficiency, that would include two things off the top of my head: Metamagic: Twinned Spell on Haste and Fog Cloud used defensively. But neither of these work on a solo playthrough.

These are the most broken things aside from the stealth exploit, but I heard that will be fixed in the full version (cmiiw).

1
FPiN9XU3K1IT•

How can you use Fog Cloud defensively? I thought it was all sorts of broking in a bad way, is there a way to actually make it useful?

1
Dead__man__talkingWyll•

Stand in the fog cloud, ranged attacks can't target you, peek out when you attack, then run back in. Makes 90% of the fights a walk in the park.

I hate managing parties that's why I have to make the most out of what I have.

Yes it is. But point of playing a game is to have fun and powergaming is a tool that can help us to achieve maximum amount of fun by enabling us to try different things such as solo play.

Learn to love it then, because the game is 10 times more fun that way. But yeah you're a true powergamer with that antisocial attitude. :D

TurkfireOP•

Only if I could upcast fireball on 9th level every fight, this wouldn't be an issue!

Triple multi-class with a level 12 cap seems weird.

In 5E you generally want to abuse a certain interaction between classes usually with a small dip. Otherwise you just go straight single class, which would net you your 10-12 class/subclass features and an ASI.

Something like a barb dip for rage or a 2 fighter dip for action surge is generally what people do. Also with multi-classing your 5 sorc with 7 half caster level, youre gunna be missing a lot of spell casting.

This setup just seems like you'll be casting EB most of the time. But then are you going to level Warlock first? From 6-10 you'll be pretty gimp until you get paladin/sorc levels and at level 11, your EB will pretty much outscale everything else with AB + magic items.

Dips are usually done super early or super late because the way 5e scales power is not great. So you really delay your spikes hard with a 5/5 multiclass. So like honestly, are you going to enjoy the game being relatively terrible until the very end when your build comes together?

I'd just pick one of the meta things and give that a go like Sorlock. Or just pick a versatile class like bard/cleric/druid and go full lvl 12. For pact of the blade you'd probably want to just go straight Warlock or dip into a martial class for like action surge or something.

It's a cool build, but it's super weak. You're spread to thing. Being melee and caster means you need high Str, Con, and Cha, while using your ASI for feats means you either going miss spells, miss weapon attack, or get 1 shot with low HP. Either go a half caster build with melee or a full caster build with mobility and utility.

MELEE: You're going to want to start paladin for the proficiency in weapons and armor if you are going melee. My suggestion is to go paladin sorc, since in BG3 you can't play a hexblade warlock, which makes pact of the blade fall off a lot. 6-8 levels of paladin for the extra attack and bonus to saves, and possibly a second asi to max out your str and con stats. The rest sorc. Focus on buff spells and utility, and grab warcaster so it's almost impossible to lose concentration. Meta magic: quickend and distant so you can hit people away from you while in melee or BA buff spells while still hitting with your action.

CASTER: For a full caster, the classic coffee lock will run you well. I'd do a 8 sorc and 4 warlock split. As Sorcerers quicked spell+ haste allows for some insane damage. Get devils sight and darkness and just sit inside the dark cloud, blasting people with advantage the moment they enter.

1
TurkfireOP•

For melee: Why would invest in STR when pact of blade gives me CHA modifier? Does it become Weapon damage + STR + CHA?

For caster: What is the benefit of going up to warlock 4 when I can get EB + 2 incontations with 2 dip which is like 99% the same damage? Wiki says pact skill upgrade comes at 5 so why stop at 4 when you can upgrade your skill at 5?

Also Fextralife released a Darkness build for Warlock which seems fun and you might one check it out

1
CynicalCanadian93•

For melee: Because that is not a feature of pact balde. That's a feature of Hexblade warlock, which is not in the game as far as we know, same with thirsting blade(it isn't in the game as far as i am aware). Plus, even if it could work, that 3 levels minimum ends up taking away your saving throws from paladin or your spell slots from sorc. Making you objectively weaker.

For caster: it's because sorcerer 8 is more powerful than warlock 5. I don't think at Warlock 5 you get new invocations, just an upgrade of your spell slot to 3rd level, i could be wrong. At 8 on sorc, you get ASI/feat, and you get an additional 4th level spell slot. Which is way stronger than any invocation anyway.

Oh, I know of the darkness builds. There are both ranged and melee versions in 5e. Hexblade +darkness is amazing. It's unfortunate that Hexblade didn't make it into the game.

Tha KS for posting an actual build

  1. don't split your levels between warlock and sorcerer. Pick one and you'll be much more powerful. 2 paladin 10 caster is strong

Don't dump wisdom completely. It's a very important save.

If you start as a sorcerer you'll get con proficiency, if you start as a paladin you'll get wisdom. Since you're taking war caster which for once actually makes sense as a real melee caster I would start as a paladin. If you want to go dexadin I would do

Str:8

Dex 16

Con 14

Int 8 (headband of intellect sucks, it's a noob trap. There are almost no int saves)

Wis 10

Cha 17

Not sure why you want to wear light armor and take pact of the blade, that's pretty bad if you're taking paladin levels. At least wear medium and lower your dex to 14 and out your wisdom at 14 or something.

Quicken eldrich blast is unbelievably bad when toy can quicken a leveled spell and then cast another.

Mobile is a relatively weak feat, don't take it. You're better off taking ASI

You don't seem to know enough about the game to play it solo. I don't recommend it personally. This is not an insult, it's just my take from reading your lost which so not a power gamer build, it's a role-play build.

1
TurkfireOP•

If you go solo though you should take resilient and put your con at an odd number.

What is the advantage of putting con at an odd number? Isn't the calculation for saves (Ability Score -10)/2? That would mean leaving it at an odd number is a waste of point. What am I missing?

Not sure why you want to wear light armor and take pact of the blade, that's pretty bad if you're taking paladin levels. At least wear medium and lower your dex to 14 and out your wisdom at 14 or something.

Wanted to invest in CHA and DEX cuz

  1. Higher innitiative

  2. CHA is the shared stat and pact of blade makes it my source of melee damage as well

  3. I was planning to take paladin last which would mean no proficiency in heavy or mid armor.

Quicken eldrich blast is unbelievably bad when toy can quicken a leveled spell and then cast another.

The idea of running out of ammo to cast magic makes me stay away from actual casters. That's why I took EB cuz I can spam that bitch as much as I want. Yeah I will run out of meta magic if I quicken every turn but that was kinda my idea too. Go in, spike a foe, turn lnvis with the item, repeat.

You don't seem to know enough about the game to play it solo. I don't recommend it personally. This is not an insult, it's just my take from reading your post which is not a power gamer build, it's a role-play build.

None taken. I go solo cuz I don't like juggling around multiple characters. I might just play coop with my friend and make him handle all those characters

Bro, this will never work if you go 10 levels of caster and then take paladin at 11 and 12. Your strategy will work on goblins, it won't work when you fight the more difficult fights (without going into spoilers) save yourself a lot of grief and don't do this.
