eli5: How can my knife leave a cut on my hand but not cut through the 5 mil vinyl gloves I was wearing?

Biology

I was working on demolding a piece of carbon when I accidentally had my knife pop towards my hand, it sliced a small portion of my skin off but the glove wasn't damaged in the slightest in that location. This has happened a few times before but I don't understand how, can someone please explain.

I don’t know, but my guess would be the knife is serrated and the points on the serration cut through the glove in small holes, then when the knife moved, the glove is very elastic so it moved with the knife and didn’t cut it more, but your hand is less elastic, so to move it needed to cut through it.

Hopefully someone can give you a better answer, but that’s my theory

Unfortunately the knife was not serrated.

What sort of knife?

It was a custom made carving knife I got from AngelSword at a Renaissance Festival.

Why would you comment if you don't know?

Because when I found the post, there were no comments and i thought I’d offer some help. If the knife were serrated it would have made sense.

It's more helpful not to answer and let someone who actually knows the answer respond to the question.

How can you punch someone with boxing gloves but not punch a hole through the glove?

I’m assuming the elasticity of the glove is preventing it from tearing, but pressure is still concentrated enough to lacerate the skin.

My Sheldon answer would of been: let me enlighten you on the metaphysical properties of string theory…but I would have been talking out my a$$

That would make sense, thanks for the response.

would *have

The confusion comes from the contracted form, would've, which sounds like "would of". This applies to could've, should've, must've, I'd've, etc.

It's just an abrasion wound. I do the same thing all the time in my job. Instead of slicing the glove open it is just putting enough pressure on the glove and sliding that along your skin with the contact point being the edge of the knife. This is enough to "cut" the skin.
