The bracket itself is bent
Worst lift gate ever….
And I think they use the same design on the Highlander and even the new Land Cruiser 😬
If you bought that new. They should be taking care of it. If they want to keep giving you the run around, then I'd consider talking to a lawyer about options.
Contact Toyota head office or better yet post picture on their Facebook page (not the dealership).
For a touch of unethical advice, if this is happening you could just be intentionally rough on it, making it worse. and then could come back a couple weeks later when it’s damn near falling off.
do you sometimes use a bicycle rack that straps onto the hatch?
nope, never. hitch mount only.
I have a 21 Venza. The liftgate hinges are super noisy. I thought they needed lubrication. But, the dealer said they need to be replaced under warranty.
Are you sure you don’t mean the strut?
Actually now that you mention it. They didn't told me what exactly needed to be replaced. They just told me they will take care of it under warranty. Will know for sure even I bring back the car for service in a couple of weeks. They did try to lubricate the hinges to fix the grinding noise first.
The electric struts are making noise for some, myself included, especially in the heat for some reason. Was told the parts on back order. Just waiting, it’s not a big deal.
Do you have winter with snow and ice?
no
Ah ok. This can happen if snow melts to ice and the gate is closed on it or even from sitting and the freeze thaw can do it. Happened to my brothers Tacoma on the hood latch. Never drove it all winter to find the hinges are tweaked now.
Happened to my 2019 rav4 as well and ended up having to get my replaced last winter.
if i may ask, how much did it cost?
I got charged about $70 for parts and labor at my local dealership. They had to order a new hinge to replace and it took a few days for the to get it fixed. Took my car, got it checked, was told to come back in a few days after they got the part. Whole process maybe took a few hours?
Powered lift hatch?
yes
That's what I thought. There have been several users over in the r/rav4club having the same issue only with the powered hatch.
This is a common issue. 2019-2021 have lots of problems.
My '22 isn't separating, but the right hinge, the body it's attached to, flexes, when oppening/closing. Also, the passenger liftgate shock is leaking oil, and groaning on close, so I will have the dealer look at it, next week, when it goes in for it's 15k service.
I honestly think, that even with the liftgate being made of aluminum, the hinge baseplate is way too small, to distribute the weight. should be almost twice the size, and with 4 bolts/rivets holding it, not 2.
Common issue. Google it. Uncle had the same thing happen. He contacted Toyota Corporate and was told to go fuck off because it was physically damaged. He had to pay close to $1200 at a body shop to fix it.
Toyota needs to get sued on this. I’ve NEVER seen a tailgate hinge separate on any car.
Same happened here. Cost us $1700
This is pretty common on Rav4s. It’s gonna need new hinges and be painted cause the come unpainted from the factory. Should be covered under your 3 year warranty
I’d go to another Toyota dealer and call corporate to see if they can warranty the hinge. I am under the impression it should be covered since it’s a 2021.
The auto lift gate struts are garbage. They get stuck and people reef on the door to get it to shut. You can't hang on a door and expect something not to bend. It sucks when the door gets stuck open but forcing it shit is what does that.
closing the hatch manually causes the hinge to bend? are you kidding me? if so, the engineers designed garbage, it is a testable fault, and toyota is culpable
Who’s hanging on their liftgate? It’s a widespread issues and Toyota sucks.
Thanks for your submission to r/Toyota.
