Advice for getting out of my comfort zone?

Console

So I've been playing a lot of crucible the last few seasons and I'd say I've gotten ok at it, not great but ok. But I'm really only comfortable using scouts, pulses and fusion rifles. So I was wondering what would be a good way to break out of my comfort zone and start practicing other weapons.

I'm well aware the answer is to put time in and practice but I'm looking for advice on specifics like weapon and mode recommendations in particular. Like what weapon type should I focus on, what rolls are good to learn on, what modes are good for practice ect. I'd really apriciate any advice that any of you could offer.

Some additional details that I have no idea if they matter:

I'm on PS5 I play warlock but I'm open to playing hunter or titan I have every exotic other than the class Glaives I have the pattern for every weapon that actually gets used in pvp.

For shotgunning, do you have a controller with two paddles? If not, I would consider remapping your slide and jump buttons. It's hard to shotgun if you have to take your thumb off the thumbstick every time you slide or jump.

I do. I usually have one set to icarus dash but I could probably start practicing on a different class/subclass thanks!

If you want to play learning less safe I’d say try shotgunning people. It can be hard at first and you may die a lot but you will learn

120 Handcannons maybe...?

It's more of a "transition" as they can roll in scout and pulse ranges but you will learn the handcannon playstyle with a gun that has a much less forgiving damage profile than your usual guns. You'll learn more about how to position yourself, how to play cover and how to pace yourself.

Try a Round Robin with Matador 64 for example for learning to shotgun and you'll be on your way to learning a Destiny classic setup.

Any advice for the perks on the HC? My gut says keep away/opening shot but I'm not super confident in that.

That exact roll is what I run personally. Kill Clip is a great alternate option for 6s and Elemental Capacitor can be strong if you main a certain element, especially arc or void.

Fluted | Ricochet | Keep Away | Kill Clip/OS | stability masterwork. Good balance of all stats plus lethality(KC) or consistency(OS)

Matador ideally Barrel Shroud | Assault Mag/Accurized | Threat Detector | OS. Pulse Monitor or Perpetual Motion can be an ok substitute for TD but TD is ideal.

Practice peek shooting at range and blinting up close. Blinting is putting in some damage with your HC or shotty and swapping for the cleanup. This takes time to get used to but is very effective for shutting down shotgun rushes or for very quick cleanups

This is the roll I use myself on Round Robin. It just feels insane. I play on PC tho so went with a handling MW instead of stability. IDC about low stability on an HC, especially a 120. Keep away is a phenomenal perk that will be #1 after RF changes.

I made the exact transition with a keep away opening shot crafted strand cannon. Max stability (if controller) with fluted.

Still go back to that thing. Opening shot on a 120 is under rated. Vacuuming that first head shot and making the rest of your kill 1c1b is great.

I'm spawn trapped, my team isn't going to push out and we are getting farmed. A 120/shotgun feels bad in that situation, my team gets mercied, I bottom KD. With a pulse, SMG, sidearm, AR, fusion rifle, almost anything else, I top frag and maybe we still lose but at least it goes to time. Am I just bad with HC and need to accept the beating for awhile, is it not a great 6s setup, or it's not great in this meta? Not trying to undermine or derail the conversation, but wondering if you experienced the beating during your transition and broke through.

I forced myself to use hand cannons and shotguns for months and yeah, you will absolutely need time. A shotgun, now, I can use. I still ape too much and get shutdown a lot, but to give you an example: months ago, I got Duality and thought "what the fuck is this shit weapon". A few weeks ago after I more or less learned the ropes with a Retold Tale, I equipped it and got over 100 kills in 2h or so, and it has never left my inventory since.

You need time. AR, pulse, sidearm, smg... they are all "hold trigger, stay on target". Handcannons demand of you to adjust between shots. It's a whole set of abilities and muscle memory you don't have and probably never used.

I am still terrible with HCs though, but I blame that to how badly aim is developed for controller more than my uselessness.

I’d recommend handcannon/ shotgun for the fun and utility.

Super subjective but I find the play style easily the most fun and rewarding. I also feel like I have vulnerable/ weak points with many other loadouts. But with HC/shotty I feel covered outside of long range.

I’ve found 120’s easier to learn with. But as far as 149’s go, Hawkmoon, and a hood spare rations with the ornament are easiest to hit shots with.

So interesting that spare rations is so likes. What’s an ideal roll look like to you?

I find it’s stats are so weak, yet it seems be loved by high skill players

I’m not one of those high skill players BUT as far as the gun itself, particularly with the ornament, is the model makes it very easy to hit shots. The reticle sits well above the gun making it very easy to keep an eye on your target.

I have a slide shot/ kill clip and slide shit/ opening shot and love both of those.

If you want to break into a new weapon archetype, the best way to not get discouraged is to set yourself up with a build that complements it. Wanna get good at sliding around with a shotgun? throw on T-steps and arc warlock or antaeus wards. Wanna run a handcannon and learn to peek shoot? put on a rose and a hunter so you've got the max possible strafe speed for peek shooting. Also learn to use your radar and what the pie slices mean. Everything you use rn you basically don't fight anyone close to you, but learning that the inner circle is 5m, middle slices are 5-24m, and the "crust" on the pizza is from 24-50m is vital for knowing which gun you should have out. If you're gonna learn to shotgun, use a precision frame or aggressive frame with as much handling and range as you can get. Conditional finality is also a fantastic option for shotgunning. SMGs are also quite good ATM, and work with almost any build. Immortal, ikelos SMG, and shayura's are probably the best ones out there right now, and if you really wanna make them feel great throw on peacekeepers with a titan

Try bows. Get into them this week and absolutely love them

If you can level up a crafted Austringer, enhanced opening shot and enhanced eye of the storm is a very tasty perk combo.

Put on Ace of Spades and force yourself into closer engagements. Ace is great because of the always on radar which helps allow you to learn position awareness. Literally cannot recommend it enough.

We're coming up on 10 years of destiny... And basically 10 years of Ace being meta in pvp.

Time to bring out the unsolicited rumble recommendation, but with how different it plays than team PvP it is wonderful for trying out/experimenting with new stuff, getting good at ones and getting good at fragging.

This post is so stupid. Start using different weapons that’s how you get practice using different weapons.

TheAsianCowConsole•

Stick to warlock and if not this then hunter. Titans right now will only build terrible habits, especially for a learning and developing player.

Put down the scout forever. Scouts build some of the worst habits possible.

Learn to peek shot. Most pulses aren’t great at this with the exception of 340s, I’d avoid rapid fires as they play more like long range autos than pulses.

To break into HCs I’d get used to 120s first before 140s. A beautiful, safe choice is Sturm. This weapon is a stat monster, looks and sounds great, and is just an amazing training wheels HC. Easiest training wheels 140 is obviously ace considering it’s nice stats, insane exotic perk, and lethality. And I’d pair it with a shotty.

CrotaLikesRomComs•

I would say actually start using a shotgun bow combo. I find it fun. And I’m not aping with my shotgun. It’s for when I get pushed. Prioritize draw time over anything else. Then probably accuracy perks like opening shot or moving target.

1
CrotaLikesRomComs•

I should add I’m referring to accuracy perks for Bow. Shotgun is all about range and handling.
