I was told, “You’re about to be based.”
Sorry for the odd question in r/Raleigh. I tried to find a slang subreddit with no luck. Maybe my fair fellow Raleigh citizens can help.
This afternoon, I made a comment someone didn’t like, and I was told, “You’re about to be based,” “You work at _________, right,” and I have no idea what they meant. I’ve Googled it, and what I’ve found makes no sense. Does anyone have any ideas? I know I’m not up to date on most current slang or cool words, and I have no idea what the person was saying. Any help? Thanks in advance.

From my understanding based is the opposite of cringe?
Okay, but that doesn’t make much sense as it was told to me. Thanks, though.

Yeah, I think the other poster was right that the person you were speaking with doesn't have a clue what the phrase means, either.
Based is something you say when someone is "Righteously correct". When someone stands up to another person who is saying something "cringe" and "spits facts" at them which shock and awe those listening, that person is described as "based".
There's other connotations it's used in, too... but it can generally be condensed into meaning someone is amazing, awesome, and correct in what they're saying.
In the context you gave? It doesn't make sense.
So… based means Katie Portered?
AOCed.
Yes, her epic takedowns would be very good examples of something "Based"
Yeah, that’s what I thought. Thanks.
So if they “you about to be based” to someone about something they didn’t agree with - it would seem they meant you about to be corrected” or some such. Like the OP is about to be on the receiving end of being based. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Who the hell knows - either way the person who said it is a punk.
I got loads of upvotes a while back for my interpretation of what 'based' means, so I take that to mean that I'm pretty close: I hear it essentially as 'ideologically cool as fuck'
Yeah, I’m positive that’s not what they meant, lmao.
Impossible, as I cringe any time I hear (or see) someone use it in actual conversation.
Annnnnd I still dont know what that means.
