ELI5: what does nigel godrich do?

i am not a musician. and i have heard him described as the '6th member of radiohead'. what exactly does he do? would someone who's never heard radiohead before say "this is definitely produced by nigel godrich"? i work in commercials and music videos and there producers basically handle finances. thanks!!
