I am Latino...Is playing Collins in Rent acceptable ?

Hello theatre gang!

I recently have been offered the role of Collins and as a gay Latino from NYC, I have been wondering if this role could be played by someone with a background like mine? Traditionally, the role has been played by Black performers, but there has been no textual proof (upon my research and years of loving this show) that he is supposed to be black. Dream show for me, but again, I don't want to offend anyone and I want to see what the community here thinks!

Thank you all!
