My parents are intent on knowing everything about my counselling sessions and want to come with me to everything
I (14f) started going to counselling because it was suggested by my dean, principal, and the counsellor. I had gotten suicidal messages from my friend and the school got involved, so everyone said I should go to counselling.
I told my parents the first 5 or so times I went, and then they wanted to know everything I said and everything my counsellor said. 3 of my counselling sessions have been because of that friend and the messages, and after that, I started going for my own person reasons. Sometimes the friend is mentioned again, but now it’s just for my reasons instead of her.
We had been talking about how I felt empty and losing interest in all my activities and stuff like that. My counsellor suggested a depression screening and I agreed. Our next session was the screening. I scored a 40 out of 50 which meant it was highly likely that I have depression. My counsellor said the next step would be to see my GP to get a proper diagnosis as she can’t diagnose me. My parents asked about everything that was said in the sessions and I felt obligated to tell them so I did. I can’t make my own doctors appointments so they had to do it for me. It took them 2 weeks from my screening for them to finally make an appointment for me. I had been asking them to the whole time.
Now they’re insisting that they should come to the doctors with me. I don’t know about anyone else who has had these tests/screenings, but for me, I prefer to do them one on one. I have trouble opening up and don’t like when people listen. When I told my parents that, they decided that I was suicidal and just didn’t want to tell them. Now we’ve come to the agreement that I can go into the room with my mum, then she’ll leave and wait right outside the door, and come back in when we’re done. And I have to tell them everything I said word for word.
Like, I get it, you’re worried about your child. But I’ve been feeling like this for around 9 months and you haven’t noticed. Haven’t cared when I’ve told you how I’m feeling. But now that other people are involved, you suddenly care and are there for me. Where was this behaviour before? Where was it when I needed it?
I need some advice, is this okay? Is this normal for parents? I feel like I should get my own privacy, especially with my counsellor. My counsellor isn’t allowed to tell them anything unless it’s got anything to do with injury, but my parents keep nagging me about it. It’s gotten to the point that I’m not telling them when I go to counselling anymore because they want to know everything and I just want my privacy. If they wanted to know, they should have cared before I had to go to other people about it.
