Not sure what to do about my relationship
Now this is a problem that isn’t only related to being CF, but for obvious reasons I don’t really want to discuss this in other relationship spaces. So excuse the off topic parts of this post, but not wanting children is a big part of this.
So, I’ve been seriously rethinking my relationship with my boyfriend, I’m a woman in my early 20’s, he’s 2 years older than me. We’ve been together for about 8 months, so not a super long relationship, but it was pretty serious. In the beginning I had sensed he may want to have children, but since I was very much in love, I decided to stay with him (we had a discussion pretty early on where I warned him abt me being CF, he said he wants to have the option but isn’t sure). Again, some would think I was stupid for pursuing this, but we really had such a lovely relationship otherwise that I just went “fuck it, I really like this guy so I’ll stay and see”
Then a few months in the subject came up again, and he confessed that he might want a child some day, not in the next 10 years for sure bc we’re both very career oriented, but still, maybe. I already kind of suspected this, I know him. For some reason I couldn’t leave. I even asked if he wants to break up, because that would be completely valid, but he said no, let’s see what happens and if none of us change our mind, we go our separate ways. Everything went sort of back to normal, up until a few weeks ago.
Here we enter other, non CF issues. After not seeing my bf for quite some time bc of the summer break (we’re both students), I had some kind of a mental health crisis, my anxiety went overboard and I experienced a lot of dissociation and other weird states of mind. In the middle of all this I realised something creepy - I didn’t really miss my boyfriend. I didn’t really need or want to see him. Obviously I had to tell him - he didn’t take it very well, for which I don’t blame him, but since I’ve practically stopped feeling anything romantic towards him, I’ve been thinking about ending the relationship.
Now I’m not a person who ends things abruptly, I always had the mindset that it’s good to at least try to save the relationship somehow, even though it seems a bit pointless to me. We had a long phonecall where I asked, even if my feelings suddenly return, what about our wanting/not wanting children differences? Wouldn’t it really be better to break up so we don’t waste each other’s time? To which he responded that right now, he would be okay with not having kids if we could stay together. It’s apparent he really wants to try to save the relationship.
I don’t know how I feel about this. I would like to believe him, but I don’t know, he seemed pretty certain before, so as much as I want this to be the truth, I can’t help but wonder if he’s saying that just to keep me (and secretly hoping I change my mind eventually).
So, what would you do in my shoes? Has anyone been in a similar situation? If what I say and do seems weird and irrational to you, it’s because this is my first serious, longer relationship, and now I’m completely lost and genuinely don’t know what to do. Thank you if you read all of my ramblings, and would appreciate any support.
