Just found my first Vex. Don't really need Hoto as I like using Occy and there are other okay alternatives to Hoto for my other characters. I guess flickering flame is the best option?

I am thinking I'd use ravenlore for my fire druid instead.
It’s a very close call, thats for sure. Someone might have to do the math to compare a perfect ravenlore to a perfect base with perfect flickering flame, I’d have no idea.
Perfect ravenlore is better, since you can put a facet in it and it also gives a nice amount of allres. Something that you will lack if you go for phoenix. You can still put flickering flame on merc for the fire res.
Doesn’t the -fire res not work for the player when merc is holding?

Terror zones maybe change the math, but you’ll usually find or cube socket an eth War Spike to 5 soc long before you find a Zerker.
I've found 3 eth zerkers, 2 on hc ladder, and NOBODY wanted them. It was a shame to throw them away.

Flickering Flame or Phoenix are both good options for fire builds
I made flickering flame and had fun with my fire sorc for a while but now I wish I had just made a HoTO instead 🤷♂️ ‘Death’ is cool if you like melee characters.
Since you are SSF, I believe best use is EDEATH.
Lo can be troublesome to farm solo, even via LK.
I second this. Edeath was a massive improvement until I found grief.

Yeah, but this comes on your second jah after your 3rd ber (although my 2nd jah is going to faith, so third if i dont want dual dream) and also needs a Lo. A CTA helps out with mana enough.
Phoenix has been a game changer imo.
I have infinity on my merc, and I was really hurting for mana. Made a phoenix for my zon, but put it on my sorc.
Hot damn. I'm never out of mana.
I’m thinking after I farm Infinity I’m going to farm for Phoenix next. But damn I’m not looking forward to having to hunt for 4 Ber runes.

Death looks great. But I guess flickering is usable on most chars though. So I'll get that first. I'm running lots of cows at the moment. Hope I find another vex.
Use for currency to buy something else you need.
Most of the other uses are far less widely applicable than HOTO so its really more of a "depends what you are making" kind of choice.
My money would be on phoenix shield and flickering flame as the other runewords have viable alternatives for their domain of application. Phoenix is very expensive though.

Everyone saying Phoenix - where do you get your jah on single player, aside from cubing up? I've done thousands of lk runs, gotten 8 Gul, 2 ohm, 2 sur, 1um, 1 mal, and just cubed up a vex for flickering flame finally. I'd love to be able to break the monotony and farm elsewhere for runes but as it's P3 cows is doable but slow and risky for my Merc (still looking for a good treachery base)
P5/7 cows with Javazon once you have a Thunderstroke or Titans, or Trav with a Horker
How do you manage P7 cows? I’m assuming Infinity, but without Phoenix or Insight my mana is gone in like three seconds. Just chug mana pots?
I’m also lacking in SOJs.. which I’m sure would help.
No Infinity or Phoenix yet, I did get a Griffons recently and socketed it with a facet, but I was running p5 with ease before that. Vipermagi, non eth Titans, spirit monarch, Treks/Infernostrides, 3/20 gloves Maras, BK/SoJ. The extra +skills are nice, but not required, I don't even have a razortail yet. I do have to chug pots, usually start with slot 3 and 4 full of mana and just pick up greaters and supers as I'm killing and rarely run out. Only focus on big groups, a ton of your damage comes from the lightning coming off the initial hit, not the hit itself. If you can't easily herd a group of 5 or less into a bigger group, just skip it and run to the next big group.
Exile is the best, most overpowered runeword in the game imo.
flickering flame is great if your sorc is fire spec if not you have half an Ohm on your hands (if you play ssf)
I'm playing SSF. I already have 2 ohms and a sur. I'm waiting on a IST rune before I make CTA. Don't wanna cube up my mals for now as I think I'd need them for mosaic or other cool stuff.
I just cubed up my Mals for cta. I had a bunch with no ists yet, but cta is absolutely helpful for keeping the merc from dying. Additionally you keep your mana up a lot better from run to run.
I also cubed up 2 ohms for a grief. Funny that I had 3 ohms and not one ist yet.
Yeah I get that. But IST runes are not too rare. I've found a couple of them in the past. Pretty sure I'll find one soon rather than waste 2mals.
