I am curious what the author thinks. Are you also the author of this account? Or is it just an article about someone else's experiences?

It's an article someone else wrote. I stumbled on it and I felt it was relevant to this subreddit and would resonate with quite a few people here.

It seems incredibly sad to me.

There were some details that were not clear to me.

Unfortunately this kind of story is far from unique. While it's not advertised openly, a slew of TTI places offer conversion therapy.

Those “education consultants” can ask for a parent’s desired focus of treatment, which can include sexuality, and point parents in the “right” direction.

In Utah conversion therapy is officially illegal. So the programs call it “experimental treatment for gender dysphoria” instead.

This is what a good friend of mine told me.

I also am trans ,and the programs I was at had a conversion therapy component to them, although that isn’t why I was sent there . I was sent because I was self harming because of dysphoria and my mom was worried I’d kill myself so I needed supervision. It was never to “make me not trans” but everyone was convinced I had a really bad case of bipolar but no meds would work (because I’m not bipolar) but because no medication would work they thought I needed to be institutionalized. But because I was so visibly queer they sent me to a special group specifically for the queer kids

Thanks for sharing your story ! I'm not too surprised that the diagnosis they gave you was complete bullshit. I've read so many testimonies of other kids who were sent away and diagnosed with all sorts of illnesses even if they didn't have those whatsoever. I really hope that now you're able to live as your true self and were able to find a semblance of peace in spite of all that was inflicted on you.

I am . Looking back it’s absolutely absurd that they thought I was bipolar. That diagnosis was used for years as an excuse to gaslight me and forcibly medicate me .

I was literally sobbing tears every night because I wanted to be a woman and even was hospitalized because of trying to cut off my parts. I have no idea how that sounds like anything but gender dysphoria.

Thankfully I have “the surgery “ in a few weeks and I’m currently on my way to my therapist to pick up my referral that I need to get the surgery

Oh that's absolutely the goal. The more the meds a kid is on, the more lethargic they are and the more compliant they end up becoming. It also helps the facility justify any semblance of normal behavior as "acting out" and ramp up the dosage or prescribe more meds.

Damn, that's indeed major dysphoria symptoms. The fact that they didn't do anything to help with that is just cruelty, no ifs or buts.

Fingers crossed it all goes well and heals quickly !
