I recently watched streamers review and play this game, and I have enjoyed what Is even quite a lot.
But before I commit to buying the two books,, I wanted to ask. Is there a way to play, even with some reflavor, a shifter like character? I have been playing various since 3e, and there is some examples in JRPG, so while it is a bit of a niche, it's not unheard of.

You'll probably want to take a look at the Mutant from the playtest. Its core skills revolve around adapting and adjusting your body into other forms or things to help you (even turning parts of you into other weapon categories). Can easily be flavored as a shifter character as one of its alternate names is lycanthrope.
You can also mix in skills from Chimerist and Fury to get a more primal/bestial feel. That's how I would run it.

I'm currently playing a shapeshifting slime using the Mutant from the playtest documents as the baseline (the idea was playing the Monster Party Member, ala Umaro and such).
It's pretty solid!
Just be careful with Mutant, as it’s the most prone to rules adjustments and ability changes atm
It actually isn't, the techno fantasy book is currently being proofed for the italian release, so the version you see in the current playtest is final! :) It will also be removed next month, as with all playtest content when the book comes out in italian. English TF will be next year.

Yes, there is the mutant class that is based on shapeshifting, available in the playtest materials. You also choose the specific creature based on the generic buff you obtain
