I want to start a new worldbuilding project but I don't know if I want to do sci-fi or fantasy, so I'm leaving it up to others to decide :D

Do both, that's what I did. Basically it's a scifi setting where magic exists as well. The planets all have widely different levels of technology, so you can tell pretty much any story you want in it.

Certainly not hard scifi, but I do explain it enough to make sense.

Oooh, that's cool! I'll take a look at that

Take a look at this Star Wars Franchise šŸ‘€

1
Synthwave_Druid•

This definitely feels like the Star Wars route and I am all for it

555moo•

Or 40k. Both of them are pretty steeped in it.

Why pick between sci-fi and fantasy when you can do both and have wizards traveling the stars in magitech spaceships?

1
BreadFuelOPSearching for Eternity•

That's a good point. I don't know why not to have both.

1
Charlotttes•

you can't go wrong with science fantasy. the best of both worlds!

1
BreadFuelOPSearching for Eternity•

That's what everybody is saying haha

1
Yggdrasylian•

everyone already said the same thing but: Space Fantasy.

I feel it was way more represented in the 60s / 70s but modern Space Fantasy got very rare imo. Yet it's an interesting genre, with a lot of possibilities

Enkhoffer•

Far future post apocalyptic - so far from modern society after the fall that it has circled around to medieval or ancient-equivalent again!

1
BreadFuelOPSearching for Eternity•

Could you elaborate on that for me?

1
Enkhoffer•

I mean in the style of The Time Machine or Horizon Zero Dawn, for example.

History has progressed so far past whatever apocalypse took place that the world as we know it has been completely forgotten.

Human society has started over completely and has (at the time of the story) reached a stage similar to the iron age or medieval times - and all remnants of our technology exist only as ancient arcane artifacts, overgrown ruins, and mythology.

1
BreadFuelOPSearching for Eternity•

oooh, that's neat. I like that idea. Really cool.

Thank you for elaborating :D

1
Enkhoffer•

No problem!

1
Enkhoffer•

For another example you could even look at the country Numeria in the Pathfinder RPG system

1
ScottaHemi•

science fantasy time!

but really what do you currently have and what don't you have yet?

1
BreadFuelOPSearching for Eternity•

I've done a high fantasy worldbuilding project, a space sci-fi project, and a grimdark/dark fantasy project. I think I might do science fantasy based off of what people are saying

1
ScottaHemi•

that'd probably be pretty fun :)

1
BreadFuelOPSearching for Eternity•

I honestly don't know. I think I'll start with the actual world itself (geography, regions, etc...) and then build up from there. But I'm kind of thinking of doing a dark fantasy project too because a lot of the votes are saying to do that....

choices, choices..

1
TempleHierophant•

I couldn't decide between a sci-fi or fantasy setting...

... so I did both: Science-Fantasy can be better than both, imo.

1
The-Dark-Memer•

Steampunk!

1
ErnieEvil01•

Space Fantasy

1
Ok-Maintenance5288•

High Sci-fi High Fantasy world(magitech and technomagic)

1
TriforceHero626•

Why not both?

1
ChloeDrew557•

I like Sci-Fi Fantasy, personally.

1
Nessus_16•

Overwhelming majority of world worldbuilders are fantasy builders, you've made a skewed poll without realizing it

1
BreadFuelOPSearching for Eternity•

oh, ok

1
Nessus_16•

Not a criticism or complaint, I'm just letting you know that you're more than likely to get majority fantasy vote

1
BreadFuelOPSearching for Eternity•

Ok, thank you for your input, I appreciate it :D Have a good day random internet stranger!

2
Nessus_16•

You too ^^

1
LieutenantBites•

Do some crazy shit. Go wild. I love coming up with wacky ideas for worlds and seeing how far I can take it.

1
Owl_Demon_66•

Scifi but it looks like its in the hunter gatherer period

1
BreadFuelOPSearching for Eternity•

Kind of like what u/Enkhoffer commented? Like Horizon Zero Dawn or something along those lines?

1
Owl_Demon_66•

Yeah sorta

1
BreadFuelOPSearching for Eternity•

Cool

1
Zan_Wild•

Post sci-fi fantasy. It's a weird genre but can be very interesting

1
555moo•

I really like steampunk magic settings. One of my worldbuilding projects is basically Steampunk Harry Potter with Monster Hunters and guns, so I've got that going for me.

1
thecyriousone•

Do a half and half: science fantasy (sci-fa as I like to call it)

1
IliaKWriter•

Do what you want but I personally think mix of sci-fi and fantase the best(in right hands)

1
GhesterBlehster•

my beautiful dark twisted fantasy
