I do it as one encounter per "habitat" for example I only allow one encounter in a Glistening Cave and the Glistening Cavern as well as it being the first pokemon I actually see. I'll close my eyes before entering and then open them, whatever I see first I go for

Same strategy I used the only other rule I had was I could only get an encounter after earning a new badge.

I do one encounter total. Pick an undiscovered room, close your eyes, and wander until you hear the encounter noise. That’s your encounter

One encounter for the entire game, pick a random room. I play with Dupes and Species Clause, so I beelined towards the first unique encounter that's closest to my character. Just know that you'll need to have a decently-leveled, type-varied team to take on these Pokemon, especially if you happen to run into something like a Houndoom or a Gastrodon.

I like to do one encounter per gym badge. There are some really good pokemon down there, so maybe that's some overkill, but in my defense, the diamond pearl dex sucks so I make it better.

It's also nice to kinda get an encounter for each different environment as we progress in the story.
