Holidays with kids

Hi! I am 4 months pregnant with my first child. For the past 2 years, a very good friend couple has been saying that we should have the summer holidays together, but unfortunately our plans just did not work out. They are very supportive of us and are excited to meet the little one. Both me and my husband would love to spend a few days with them (we did this a few times before), but I fear that now with a baby on the way that won't be possible anymore. I have a few questions on this topic.

1. Did anyone try going on a trip with friends instead of grandparents with the child? Did it work out fine?
2. When is the best time for a "relaxing" trip with a child? When they are newborn-ish, infant, toddler, preteen, teen?
3. What would be the best method of travel with a child?
4. I have heard a lot that when you have a baby, you can't travel far, one hour max by car. Is it true or maybe there are just some fussy babies? Thank you!
