How does everyone feel about the R9 Elite Monk with upgraded Lanterns?

Discussion

I thought I hated the Elite Arsonist but this mob is the worse one. Spawns in groups, teleport around and leaves/spawns Pyro Lanterns that take you out in a single hit a lot of the time with how many spawn.

This combo keeps ending my run. They eat my three or more revives and nothing seems to drain their health fast enough. I really dont like to complain but they really need to do something about this games balance. Its getting harder and harder to want to play this game.

You can always not play the hardest difficulty, it's a perfectly viable option. R9 is pretty tuned up, but I appreciate the real risk in what was an otherwise easy R8 played with a couple friends. Everybody has to be on their A game.

I'm aware but the game mode needs to be playable solo as well.

R9 was specifically created because people begged for something harder than R8. The fundamental design of reincarnation means that everything one shots you or you one shot everything. Harder/easier just means more one shots. Not interesting.

Play r8 if it's not your thing

R8 was the same. If the intent is to keep making Reincarnations because players get bored of the previous difficulty then we're gonna be here for a while.

borderlands 3 mayhem diffculty imbalances all over again lol.

you can't just make bullet sponge one-shot content for "harder content" it always turns into a bullshit unbalanced mess where players are still ultra optimizing the game to be AFK ez (repeat cycle all over agagin)

Really, the issue I have with Gunfire is some of the options probably shouldn't combo together. This is a pretty common issue amongst roguelikes in general, though.

In Gunfire it's mainly the combination of extremely high health/damage enemies alongside specific Demonic Auras, notably Elite Monks and anything that lets them heal even more, for instance. Gluttony can be a bitch for similar reasons and, in theory, impossible if you get super unlucky.

The worst part about this kind of arms race situation is that it ultimately devalues lower difficulties, too. Reincarnation 1 is all but pointless because of the overall power creep the game has undergone since it first came out. Not only does every scroll have an enhanced copy, but numerous scrolls got buffed to shit, alongside various classes.

to add to that, harder difficulties just destroy replay value because some builds or even entire characters fall off.

Me and my friend did a R9 run for the first time yesterday, it was stupidly easy :/ We could have gotten lucky though. The only mob I loathe every time is the sharp shooter boss in the snow world that keeps splitting.... its just tedious and takes SO long.

That elite is so annoying! There do seem to be combos that make even R9 easy. My first attempt at R9 I did cat with lone wolf so I could start with Painkiller (apply all elements) and his spiritual ascension that gives 100% elemental chance + damage. I breezed through.

Since them I've been trying to not start with obviously broken combos and has been a real struggle (in a good way).

The run I won, I did nothing different and the only thing that changed was the Elite Monk didnt spawn when the Elite spawns happened. It happened twice and the last time, four of them spawned in with the upgraded lanterns and when they spread out like they do and they spawn lanterns, there is never a place you can stand safely. The challenge needs to be fair and this isnt fair. Its just luck.

If you are doing an elemental effect, it carries across transfers unlike the clones. It also is the only one that fires more than once in a row. Not sure if that will help with the fights, happy hunting.

What do you mean by the elemental effect? like when it splits only the real one has the elemental effect still? Didnt know about the shooting thing either!

Yep! Say they were all afflicted with Fire when the main one called them back in to split off again, only it would still have fire on it.

By Act 3 I'm usually doing so much damage that it doesn't matter what the elites are...

Even on weaker runs I haven't found the super monks to be especially bad, since if you don't have obscene dps you at least probably have reliable CC on everything approaching you.
