Information about signed editions of Murtagh

Pinned

This post will focus on what the options are regarding acquiring a copy of Murtagh signed by Christopher Paolini. (More general information about the book may be found here)

#Copies signed on tip-in sheets:

This category refers to copies where Christopher Paolini signs a "tip in" sheet, which is then attached to the book during the binding process.

  • Standard Signed Editions

These are identical to the regular edition, except that they have a signature page tipped in.

Christopher signed 22,000 tip-in sheets for a US signed edition, making this probably the simplest signed edition to get. It has its own unique ISBN (9780593805459), and can be preordered online via Barnes and Noble and Books A Million, for the same price as the regular edition. Many other US bookstores will also have copies of this edition.

One bookstore in the UK had reported also having a signed edition (now sold out), though it is unclear where these tip in sheets came from, as Christopher has not reported signing any for this. It could be copies of the US signed edition that were imported, or it could be that some of the tip in sheets signed for the US edition were sent over to the UK and bound into UK editions. The isbn used was the UK ISBN with a -1 appended on, which may have been a placeholder. (9780241651315-1)

  • Waterstones Exclusive Numbered Edition

Waterstones in the UK will have a special edition of Murtagh that is signed and numbered by Christopher. The exact details of this edition are unknown, but they will have a total of 2,500 copies, one set numbered 1-500, and another set numbered 1-2,000.

  • Inkstone Books Exclusive Numbered Edition

Inkstone Books will have 500 copies, signed and numbered by Christopher. These copies will also feature foiling on the case under the dust jacket, red stained edges with a dragon scale stenciling, and a bookmark ribbon. Pictures can be found on their website, and general preorders are expected to open up sometime this week.

  • The Broken Binding Exclusive Numbered Edition

Inkstone Books will have 1,000 copies, signed and numbered by Christopher. These copies will also feature new artwork by René Aigner on the front endpapers, back endpapers, and edge. The edge artwork can be seen here. It is not known when preorders will open, but they are expected to be pretty soon.

Copies signed on title page

This category refers to copies where Christopher Paolini signs the book on the title page after it is fully bound. This is less practical to do at scale, but generally allows for more personalization.

  • Attend a book tour stop

Christopher will be going on a fourteen stop US/Canada tour in November, and then a UK/Europe tour in December. (The exact stops and dates for the second tour are not yet announced.) At each stop he will be doing book signings, and attending one of these is generally the best way to get a book signed and personalized on the title page.

  • Order a copy from a bookstore on the tour

If you are unable to make it to one of the stops on the book tour, most of them will be happy to mail you a book signed at the tour, though generally they will be unable to get it personalized for you. Contact some of the book stores on the tour for more details.

  • The Signed Page

The Signed Page is not a listed stop on the book tour, but they will be getting 200 books signed during the tour, and they let you request for a personalization as part of the preorder process. At the time of writing this post they still have 38 slots left.

Translated Editions

The above information generally refers to English copies of the book. There are however over ten translated editions releasing simultaneously with the English edition. If you'd like one of these to be signed your options are a bit more limited.

  • CBJ in Germany has 500 signed bookplates that they will be doing events and giveaways with in November. Book plates are essentially signed stickers that are meant to be applied into a book after it is purchased.

  • Rizzoli in Italy will have 1,000 tip in sheets for a signed edition, but it is unclear yet where this will be sold and how to order it.

  • Any book tour stops in Europe will generally have the book in the language of that country, and even if Christopher isn't stopping in your country, you can always bring in a copy with you while attending a stop in an adjacent country.

Which edition(s) are you going for?

Oh wtf. Why are there so many cool editions coming out. JUST TAKE ALL MY FREAKIN MONEY. 😭😭 I don’t need a fourth copy. I don’t. But the Broken Binding edition is stunningggg

1
ibid-11962OP•

Was there a full reveal somewhere already?

1

No, but based on the photo alone, I’m already commmited

1
ibid-11962OP•

Oh yes, I agree. I think it's the one I'm most anticipating as well.

1
UncleBrom•

Lol which versions did you get already? I just pre ordered the ink stone edition and definitely gonna have to get the broken binding edition too

1
PeterchuMC•

I've just gone for the Inkstone one. It's just really cool.

1
Thick_n_Thicker7Rider•

Any update on the ink stone one? I’ve heard some saying it’s sold out but I was under the impression it wasn’t available for pre order yet and you had to fill the Google doc out as well?

1
ibid-11962OP•

To the best of my knowledge it isn't sold out yet. The preorder page is live, but is password protected. They are emailing out the password to people who fill out the google form, in batches, in the order that the form is filled out.

1
Thick_n_Thicker7Rider•

Did you get a copy then? I signed the form literally 3 minutes after you made the one Reddit post with the form on it! No email though unfortunately.

1

This is the only post I made about it. The post I think you are referring to was made an hour afterwards.

1
UncleBrom•

I just got an email with the password like an hour ago and pre ordered it so definitely still in stock. I still want the broken binding version too tho

1

I got my email to preorder that one this morning

1
Regula96•

Oh wow that broken binding edge artwork is stunning.

Will the broken binding book ship to the US?

1
Automatic_Ad_5822•

i have a question. If I order an inkstone books' limited edition and I will order it from Italy, is it going to be shipped in english or italian?

1
ibid-11962OP•

The Inkstones Books edition is an English edition, using the standard UK text block, but with a different title page and binding.

There will be a signed and numbered Italian edition but I haven't yet seen any details about it or information for how to get it. I'd suggest reaching out to the Italian publisher.

1
ibid-11962OP•

Some information about the Italian special edition was released today on Instagram.

I don't know Italian, so I'm not sure where to look for more info, but if you find anything to let me know.

1
Automatic_Ad_5822•

Perfect, by the way the italian variant can also be ordered on www.mondadoristore.it on the first days of november but i'm not sure if it will be able to send it in any other country that isn't italy

1
ibid-11962OP•

The order link is live for the Italian Lucca variant.

There's no purchase limit so it's possible this one sells out quick, but seeing as it's in Italian and the website doesn't ship out of the country, it probably won't be as crazy as Inkstones and Broken Binding were.

1
ibid-11962OP•

Thank you. I'll add that to the post.

1
para-diddly•

Any word on if the Broken Binding sale will be on their website? Or if there will be a separate link somewhere?

Excellent, cheers!

Any exclusive editions for in-store locations in Canada? I feel like canadians always miss out because Chapters has a chokehold on the book industry here, and shipping a book from the states is so expensive 😭😭

1
ibid-11962OP•

Not that I've heard of. To be fair though, the cool editions this time around are mainly coming from England, not the US.

The US signed edition is fairly boring and uninteresting.

1

So disappointed I missed out on all of these

I'm so happy to be italian rn, i bought the variant of Lucca just in time and I can't waiiiit to finally receive it aaaaaaa😍

I just picked up a signed copy in Montana with ISBN 9780593650868, does that mean it’s not a tip-in? 🤔

1
ibid-11962OP•

Which page is it signed on? If it's signed on a blank page it's a tip-in, and I guess it means I was wrong about them actually using the designated isbn. The standard book does not have any blank white pages at the beginning.

If it's signed on the title page then it's not a tip-in. Christopher lives in Montana and if the bookstore is close enough to him he very likely popped in there in person to sign some books before starting his book tour.

Can you share a picture of the signed page?

1
pimposaur•

It must be a tip in then because it’s a blank page right in front! I can take a picture when I get home later tonight.

1
ibid-11962OP•

Sounds like a tip-in then.

I've never actually seen one in person, so it's quite possible that they never actually changed the physical book. But the online listings for them have used a different ISBN. I think I might update this post.

1
Grumpygillsfish•

They kept the ISBN inside the book the same for the tipped ins but changed it on the dust jacket near the bar code.

Does anyone have any information on when the Waterstones Exclusive version will drop or be available for purchase? Will it be like the Waterstone’s version of Brisingr & Inheritance?

1
ibid-11962OP•

There is a listing on Waterstones right now with a new ISBN that might be the edition. No details are specified though.

Update for UK readers- signed edition back in stock at Waterstones 😇
