Overworked knee tattoo. Care going forward?

Discussion

Just got this done on my knee 3 days ago and it's been hella painful. The knee cap as shown in the pic looks like it was overworked. You can kind of see three deep gashes in the pic that look like skin was ripped out.

The red is where he tried to work in some red over the black and only on that half section. I'm guessing that's why only that part looks beat up.

Thoughts? I think it looks pretty awful but it's also still healing. The sheen is just from the light layer of aquaphor I put on. I've also been using white Vaseline cream lotion which has been good on the rest of the tattoo.

There's no puss, blood or smell right now. But it doesn't look like it'll heal fully black as intended.

I have two sleeves and a calf tattoo and none of them were like this. Any thoughts would be appreciated. TIA!

Definately looks rough/ overworked. Keep it clean, moisturized like you would normally. Anticipate you will probably need more touch up in those areas. An area of my inner arm where the skin was very thin looked like that. It scabbed more than normal and for longer but healed ok. There were some areas that the color fell out a bit more, but healed fine after a touch up. I let my artist know ( she has done multiple large projects on me and I've always had a great experience) and she went in that area more gentle next time. It didn't help it was an area that she was using red and fuscha, so the irritated skin blended nicely into the ink color.

Thanks so much! Makes me feel better. When it healed, was the color just chunked out? Mine looks like it’ll heal that way but hard to tell at this stage.

Yeah just small areas with very little to no color in them. They looked shiny/ light like the start of a shallow scar. We let that area heal a couple months ( were doing monthly sessions) and it took the color no problem next time. It's now about 6-7 months out and you can't tell at all- looks the same as the other areas. My artist said it healed similar to if someone picks at the scabs( obviously I didn't), because the thicker scabs took alot or the pigment with them when they finally came off. I used extra ointment on those areas( not actually ointment don't know what else to call it) bc they got extra dry/ tight.
