Record live instruments

I have been using the sampler to record live guitar into machine but sometimes it's a little funny with the inputs and outputs not responding correctly and taking too much set up time. Is this the only way to record live instrumentation onto a track you've already created? I believe it is but I'm hoping someone here can tell me something different about maybe the audio module or some sort of new timeline-esque method. Thanks in advance!
