Help I snapped a string from a violin borrowed from school

I was trying to tune the violin with the pegs because the fine tuner wasn't able to be turned anymore and I wasn't paying attention and snapped the string.Do I tell my teacher?Do I replace it and just not tell him?Help I am very lost right now
