Software / controller pairing

Hi,

I was inspired by Burning Man and want to spend the rest of my free time designing a project involving 30k LEDs. I started small with ws2812b + Arduino + power bank.

I want to drive 500meters of 60 pixel/m ws2811 strips. I am getting a bit lost in pairing software with controllers and looking for some recommendations on what I should be learning. I am also, naturally, crossing into Christmas lighting tech.

Main question: is software like madrix, resolume,xlights, etc... compatible with most modern controllers? I am looking at the kulp 32 controller as it is expandable to 48 channels each driving ~800 pixels. Kulp is driven by BeagleBoard and has FPP flashed. Not sure how that plays with 3p lighting software like those mentioned. Any tips on where I should start? Or what questions I should be asking...
