What do you think of the “three great loves” theory?
I was reading up on Helen Fisher and her Three Loves Theory.
The premise is that we (huge over generalization) have three great loves in our life: Lust, Attraction, and Attachment. I’ve heard another interpretation that maps it more to one to grow with, one to grow a family with, and one to grow old with.
If taken literally, I can see this as three separate people in different stages of one’s life. There may be other lovers mixed in, but the biggies stand out in those categories.
I read another theory that these are phases and can all be with the same person, but you clearly step from phase to phase in your life. Even just the way you see love in those phases of your life and they may be multiple lovers, across those three types. Or just one.
Aside from the obvious generalizations, I find that this makes some sense, if only in theory. Curious how your past loves may have mapped to this theory?
Personally, I certainly had the lusty love in the college days (not a defined single individual that stood out). Later found someone I was head over heels with and perhaps (?) knew it wasn’t forever, but certainly saw the relationship as more of an attachment than passion, or it evolved into that anyway. And I haven’t hit the part yet where I’ve found the kind of love where we ride off into the sunset together. Permanent attachment?
So I guess I see it purely as stages, not individuals.
