Fender Champion 50xl Muddy distortion/overdrive?

The cleans on the amp are absolutely amazing, however, most of the dirty voicings are either not gritty enough or fart out... The amp does not have a mid control so I'm assuming it already has the mids preset and the amp can be "bassy" so I keep the bass EQ low and the treble at a sweet spot.

Should I just get a cheap Overdrive pedal like the Fender Hammertone and be done?

Also, I have a Katana 100 but dont play live anymore or for the foreseeable future so I have been rocking the Fender but am looking for any advice for a dirty channel and I play classic rock, blues, country, and some pop for the most part if that helps.
