Should I mention the writing programs I graduated from when sending out query letters?
I'm going to start the process of searching for an agent and have gotten conflicting opinions from two people about what I should mention in my query letters. I have a BFA and MFA from two pretty prestigious writing programs where I was able to study under some famous authors over the years. Since I have no social media presence and haven't published any fiction (my project is a novel, by the way) one person I spoke to told me that I should mention where I went to school and who I was taught by, since it would signal that I was good enough to be accepted into good programs and have received great training. Basically this person's reasoning is that I should use anything I have to my advantage.
The other person I spoke with told me that this would be silly to mention and that the only thing that matters to agents is that a book be well-written and marketable. He said that if my book doesn't grab an agent's attention, it doesn't matter where I went to school or who mentored me.
What do you all think?
