Anti-LGBTQ vandalism

I guess someone dropped paint on the Pride sidewalks last night and vandalized the Tabernacle Congregational Church?

Not sure if anyone's posted this already.

I just saw Ty Hapworth’s instagram post and came here to see what happened. Ugh, that sucks. But I am optimistic that it will be re-painted quickly.

Saw the tabernacle on the way to the train this morning. I meant to take a picture and post it tonight if it wasn’t already done. Had this happened before?

Off the top of my head I think it's been a couple years, but I'm not sure.

If they could go ahead and just NOT redo the trans crosswalk, that would be nice. It's ugly as sin.

1
bacon_and_eggs•

Fuck off.

1
sadiesfreshstart•

Nah. As an actual real-life trans person I have every right to have an opinion on that crosswalk. And it's ugly.

1
FloralAlyssa•

And everyone else has the right to tell you to fuck off.

And there's nothing that says I have to listen. Sorry!

Seriously?

1
sadiesfreshstart•

Oh no, I have an opinion about something directly related to my existence! How dare I!

People don't have to like my opinion, and I don't have to care if they do or not.

Imagine if we gave people rights instead of a painted crosswalk 🤔

1
sadiesfreshstart•

I mean... It is Salem and there's nowhere else I'd rather live as an actual trans person, but this is just awful. At least put the stripes in the right order!

1
FloralAlyssa•

Imagine if we did both. The city actually backs up words with actions, unlike a fair number of its residents.

1
sadiesfreshstart•

What residents would those be?

1
Erin_Paige•

If we truly had the former, we wouldn't need the latter

1
FloralAlyssa•

And until you have the former, working towards them and having outward expressions that people are safe here is appreciated and important.

1
dmoisanDowntown•

We redo the crosswalk, as many times as we have to. It is OURS, not theirs!

1
sadiesfreshstart•

Can we PLEASE put the colors in the right order this time? Maybe just run an extra long flag from curb to curb?

1
Erin_Paige•

I don't disagree, but this gives major "It's MY money, and I need it NOW!" vibes 😂

The crosswalks are painted by volunteers with donated material. I'm not going to give cover to a bigot by suggesting that the object they vandalized was "ugly" or " not up to my standards".

Honest question; what rights do you believe the city of Salem denies you? The city specifically (the city Government, services, and administrative staff).

It's my impression (cis male) that the city is supportive and protective of equal rights and actively seeks to display a commitment to that support with visible gestures like painted crosswalks. Am I missing something?

it's an earnest question not a challenging one.

It was painted by kids and teens who volunteered with NAGLY…… why is everyone such a baby about this it was cool

sadiesfreshstart•

I love the idea of a bunch of different Pride flag crosswalks. The regular rainbow ones are great and I always smile when I use them!

The trans one is just ugly. Converting a white stripe crosswalk just didn't work well from a design perspective. Something more like this would have looked a lot better and more cohesive in my opinion:

It was awesome, and will be again when they repaint it. I've had several trans friends from out of town tell me how awesome it is that Salem has that. It's just one person complaining, not 'everyone'.

1
sadiesfreshstart•

That one person sharing an opinion*

The kids at NAGLY can't have anything nice. /s

Could you imagine being so pathetic, this is what you do with your free time? On the bright side, this just brings more people together and is another example of how insane people can be. Here’s to voting pro-lgbt in 2024.

I walked past the church on my way to the salon and was heartbroken to see something like that. What is actually wrong with people?

To our LGBTQ+ neighbors and to those just passing through Salem on vacation, we love and support you and do not stand for this act of hatred. ❤️

Bolt_DTD•

As one of the queer folks of Salem, I thank you for your kind words. My only regret is not being there to witness the act. I would have loved the chance to detain the "artist" until the authorities arrived. There's no place of bigotry in Salem.

Sounds like there are plans in place to repaint them as soon as this weekend. Reach out to your ward counselor if you want to help.

The city was pressure washing the pride colors crosswalks today

1
Firebollie•

Yeah they r repainting then soon

1

Some cowardly fuck also vandalized the pride flag at Northeast Animal Shelter.

1
sadiesfreshstart•

Seriously? What the hell?

1

It’s insane to me. I believe they do have cameras on the property, hopefully they caught something useful if so.

1
Teratocracy•

So what did the first door that was vandalized say? Does anyone know?

It was:

Door 1 - [illegible]
Door 2 - LGBTQ
Door 3 - 2024

Cancel

1
sadiesfreshstart•

Maybe if we're cancelled we'll get picked up by another network? Maybe an awesome spinoff?!

1

Some great sitcoms/series were spin-offs, so who knows?

1
Teratocracy•

Ah, okay.

1
Parsnique•

It feels weird that anti-LGBTQ+ vandalism would use the term LGBTQ. Wouldn't someone who actively wanted to make a hateful message use the uh... nastier terms? It sucks either way, but just strikes me as an oddity.

1
sadiesfreshstart•

This is actually a good point. Usually it would be one or more of the plethora of slurs that get thrown out way. Cool kid edgelord trying to be tough?

1
Parsnique•

Exactly my thoughts. Some dumb kid.

1
sadiesfreshstart•

If it weren't Salem I would consider being concerned, but between the scope of the crime and the city it happened in I'm pretty sure the community is very quickly going to come back stronger.

1
MysticalEggTrap•

I know who did it.

1
sadiesfreshstart•

Then how about you share that information

1
MysticalEggTrap•

I don’t want them to get in trouble.

1

They should get in trouble. Don't be a coward and namedrop them.

1
sadiesfreshstart•

Then maybe they shouldn't have committed vandalism. I'm wondering if you knowing technically makes you an accessory or not 🤔

1
MysticalEggTrap•

Well, I can tell you this. My friends dad did it and she told me. I have nothing to do with it, but I’m not getting my friend in trouble or her dad.
