What name would you change Emma to?

It is assumed that Jane initially named Persuasion 'The Elliots',, Sense and Sensibility was named Elinor and Marianne. What would you rename Emma to following the same theme?

(Sorry if this question has already been discussed)

Ooo I like this. Or maybe Dunning Kruger. 😆

Interestingly there is a novel called this written in modern times as a sequel to Pride and Prejudice.

I suppose Hartfield would be one way to go. A cumbersome option would be Hubris and Humility. Frankly I think the title Emma is as flawless as the novel. But this is a very fun thought experiment.

I like Hartfield a lot. To think of it, the place is equally important. A much more social village, say Netherfield, may never allow such close-knit group with clashing lives and thoughts. And without that, the whole story may never pan out... so Hartfield is indeed central to the story, almost as much as Emma herself.

It’s also “heart” field, so the terrain on which hearts are played with for sport, which is quite apt (and is perhaps intentional).

Emma is so about Emma that it's hard to rename. But if I had to, I'd go with "Misinterpretations".

I wonder now if it’s called Emma precisely for that reason.

She’s wrapped up in her own world. And most of the characters are wrapped up in her. Mr. Westin even gives the puzzle about the two letters in the alphabet that spell perfection.

I really like this! And I agree that it's a very difficult novel to rename, but I think you nailed it

Love and Friendship (spelled correctly this time) 😉

I like this one because it follows the pattern without giving anything away. Maybe that’s why Jane went with the older styling, to keep the plot mysterious.

The Match, or perhaps, Intrigue and Interpretation.

Slightly off topic, but for a modern title, "Playing with Matches." (Hat tip to "Fiddler on the Roof.")

Highbury. Because most of it takes place and surrounds Highbury and its residents.

Kinda like how Sanditon was going to be.
