My First Rewatch - Fever (2x16)

SPOILERS

Fever is completely daft, but I'll give them this - it's entertainingly daft. Seeing Jonathan go all Mission: Impossible on a military base (or whatever it's supposed to be) was fun and exciting, and that following car chase with the helicopter was the cherry on top. I was genuinely on the edge of my seat wondering how the heck the Kents are gonna get out of this one. There's so many plot holes, but I didn't really care.

That being said, eff the writers for THAT Chlark scene. Eff right off. Now you're just torturing the poor girl. The letter was super sweet in a "I'm a teenager who has no idea what I'm doing" kind of way. Sinking it may be, but I'm going down with this ship.

Notes:

  • How did Pete end up with Clark when he supersped back home to get the spaceship out? Was he already on the farm?
  • Wouldn't the chief doctor notice Clark on the side of the road and wonder how he got ahead of them?
  • Why does the spaceship emit healing waves? Did it read Clark's mind and just obey him?
  • Maybe a personal nitpick, but I wish Martha lied about the key not because she was afraid Clark would want to leave (which is a bit ludicrous imo), but because she thought the ship would do something to him.
  • Why didn't Lana call 911 when Clark collapsed?
  • One of the things I really love about the early seasons is how little details come back into play later. Like Clark's blood seems to be a one-off thing here but it becomes a major detail later on. It feels realistic and makes Lex seem more intelligent because he keeps track of all this (any day now, he'll turn to Clark and ask "just one more thing...")
  • There is no way Jonathan doesn't get caught in that base lol, how would he even know where to look? And why does he throw stuff around in that little lab? It's not like the key is hiding under anything lol, everything is clearly labeled and separate.
  • I wish the writers made it clearer whether Clark was completely depowered or not, because he seems able to push the car out with Pete's help (which would take at least some super strength... and also, how did the hospital people not see him do that??) and he had to find Jonathan at the base using x-ray vision.
  • No one sees the spaceship glow in the middle of the street like a disco light???
  • I like the ambiguity surrounding Lex's decision to ask Helen to stay. Is he doing it for himself, or to learn more about Martha's condition (suspecting that she's involved in the Kent Conspiracy™)? Does he think her research would disrupt their relationship?
  • So if Helen is supposed to be a villain (if I remember correctly), why hasn't she ever tried to make a profit off of Clark?

Overall, I thought it was a dumb, but enjoyably campy episode of Smallville. I loved the bigger stakes and having more of the spaceship arc in it.
