My dwarves won´t make the specified image

As the title said, I want to make a temple to some gods in my playthrough and add a stone statue of the most prayed to gods in the temple.

However when I specify an image of the gods, it simply makes a statue of some random other dwarf, not the god I want. (It only made the correct statue of 1 god, which is the diety of the dwarf making the statues, could it be they don´t want to make statues of other gods?)

Check the description on the statues your dwarf made. Often when I make statues of a forgotten beast I get a statue of “Urist McRedshirt” and the description says it relates to the killing of Urist McRedshirt by the forgotten beast in the year 38.

It gives thesame description despite me requesting 2 statues of 2 different gods and does not mention these gods at all (I tried 3 times for one and 2 for the other god and got 5 statues of thesame guy with no mention of the gods I requested)

I´ll try a custom artwork then next time I play.

I never made a statue of a god, but maybe the image ends up being one of their worshippers.

Wait, you can customize what statues get made? How? I just learned you could customize engraving, how do you customize art?

When specifying image I believe the bottom one is custom art and you can design it yourself (could be second from the bottom too)

After you put the order in to the relevant workshop, click the magnifying glass next to the order and say "specify image". The search function is kind of clunky (if you want a statue of a dwarf in your fortress, say "historical figure" and have their full name ready to look for, because the options will include every person in the world's history), but in my current fortress I now have a tomb complex with a slab and custom statue for each of my nobly slain / ignobly squashed citizens.

Gods don't actually exist in the world. The image mechanism defaults to picking events that exist in the world. If there are no events that exist in the world related to the god, then you'll get a description of the god. If there are any events related to the god, then you will get a description of the being that was involved with the god. Often these are beings that were cursed by the gods (and turning into werebeasts, etc), or that kind of thing. Unfortunately, you'll often get some random event in their life that's not even related to the god.

It's frustrating, but just the way it is. I suspect it will improve in the Myth and Magic arc, but that's years away.

So I just need to keep trying untill I get the event in their life involving the god?

I don't think that will have the outcome you want.

It would be better to just select the god from historical figures then add an action like " x is striking a menacing pose" (at a minimum, make it as complex as you want.

That way you get the statue you want.

Don't forget to bedazzle the statues with gems, bones & shells!

Ah okay, will do so. Thank you for the advice

It's happened to me since before the steam release, some gods get normal statues of themselves or of the god cursing people, but other gods it seems impossible to get statues of. Tried in many different worlds over many different versions of DF.

It often ends up being a statue of a dwarf labouring/ creating something.

I think maybe the dwarf is making an item related to the god or inspired by them or something and that's why the game keeps giving me these statues.

Either that or the god description is bugged because no-one knows what they look like or they've never done anything since world gen.

Someone told me to make custom art of the god doing something like ´striking a menacing pose´ that way you´re guaranteed to get it. Have not tried it yet as I´m not on my pc anymore.

Thank you, I'm just starting a new world so I'll try that next time I'm making temples, I've always wanted a proper statue of every god in my main temple, hopefully the custom image works

I hope so too, cause I want that too, that´s why I asked the question

I had the same problems trying to order specific statues for my temples, but I found a solution:

Specify a new custom image when ordering the statue to be made (looking glass symbol) and then set the new image to be just the desired deity (historical figure>look for gods name). This way the new image of what you specified gets saved in the symbols list so you can conveniently order new artwork with the same motif.

Interesting, I've only been using the "specify a new image" route for my statues and engravings. My first "related to historical figure-> deity" statues just gave me "statue of deity, depicted as such and such" , but my world is pretty new and some of these don't have many worshipers.
