Are there drug wholesalers? From where do drug dealers get drugs?

I have never been involved in the drug trade so I was wondering if drug dealers are retailers from where do they get the drugs in first place? Do they buy drugs wholesale and then sell it to smaller customers or are they supplied with a constant amount of drugs and sell them and get a fixed salary from a syndicate.
