I don't understand the certain issues people have with companions.

So, I've been playing this game since almost the initial release, and only now I decided to actually go on the net and look at what people write about it. So far, I've seen a lot of people complaining about companions, and Sarah in particular, disliking thefts, accusing them of murdering enemies, stealing ships, etc. But from all my time in the game I didn't have any issues with this. I play semi-good character, but I occasionally steal minor stuff here and there, like cleaning Galbank ATMs, stealing survivor ships and stuff, and Sarah, Barrett and Sam never complained. Is my game bugged or something?
