Just noticed this on the replay. Dummy runners are one thing, but taking out a defender after the pass has gone behind him is not running a dummy line, that's taking out a defender. Hansen would have been in position to tackle Libbok, maybe the try would still have been scored, but its a lot less likely that he would have gotten that pass away.

Images do capture it pretty well but if you want the video find it here. https://yourrugbycatchup.top/index.php/2023/09/23/ireland-vs-south-africa-2023-09-23/

This happens regularly …if you can tie up a defender without getting caught, you do it

All these photos do is make it look like Hansen is committing to Kriel. You won so move on mate

Yeah what I don’t understand, Hansen is making that tackle on Kriel

He's not. Look at the first image, Hansen is standing with his weight on his back feet, arms down, DA has already released the ball behind. Hansen is looking at the ball. Why would he commit to tackling Kriel after that?

They looked at this during the game (Libbok had to pause the conversion), I thought at the time that it made no difference and SA were always going to score but that it was still a penalty, not the most egregious one so wasn’t too upset.

Though I would like to know if there’s a distinction in the rules about what is an obstruction and what is a legitimate dummy run?

Yeah it probably wouldn't have made a difference, but still an aspect of the game that annoys me. Hansen is quick, if he was able to get in his face maybe the pass wouldn't have been so exact.

Post a clip instead of screenshots and if you have to post screenshots then you need to put in at least 5 yellow circles per image.

As you can imagine we get a lot of videos, takes, observations about the officiating per RWC game. There are a lot of games. The danger is that other discussions end up getting drowned out by the sheer amounts of often repeated discourse about this and that game or decision.

Therefore, please post your thoughts in the post match thread.

Thank you!

Kriel looks like a legitimate option when the pass goes, I think a ref might call obstruction because he follows through but that would probably be a harsh call.

"Intentionally" gives the refs a lot of leeway here

Laws 9.2 & 9.3

An offside player must not intentionally obstruct an opponent or interfere with play.

A player must not intentionally prevent an opponent from tackling or attempting to tackle the ball-carrier.

But on the other hand Law 10.1 is less open to interpretation

A player is offside in open play if that player is in front of a team-mate who is carrying the ball or who last played it. An offside player must not interfere with play. This includes:...Preventing the opposition from playing as they wish.
