Debt

Hi, I’m 22, living in Ontario originally from Quebec. I had a previous (first) rental apartment where my roommates and I decided to do an equalized payment plan for our HydroQc bill, the amount was similar to what our landlord had quoted as the average cost of electricity. We always paid the bills in full & on time, and we were all really careful & good about turning off appliances/lights/electronics when not in use. Upon moving out from this apartment 11 months later, I got a bill from HydroQC for about $1000 based on the meter reading.

I’m a full time student, unemployed & chronically disabled since childhood (both physically & mentally). At the time, I was already maxed in CC debt ($2.5k) and living month to month with my mom’s & government support to pay rent. My monthly budget is (and was) $550-600 excluding rent and (hydro gas wifi) utilities (which has been increasingly difficult to live off with inflation) so I ignored the Hydro bill and hoped I’d find an accessible employment opportunity or some other solution to pay it in the meantime.

It’s been 2 years, during which time my health has deteriorated significantly completely barring any ability to work and nearly causing me to drop out of school to focus on my health. Believe me when I say I would LOVE to work if I physically and mentally could, but on top of multiple doctors appointments a week, tedious health management regimes at home, and academic responsibilities, I haven’t been able to find anything that meets my accessibility needs. Worth noting that I live in the suburbs, far from any places of employment, don’t drive, and public transit is so unreliable here that getting to such areas adds an extra 2 hours of travel each way (4h out of my day that I can’t afford). The longest I’ve been able to hold down a job is a few months before I was hospitalized due to burn out and compounding health deteriorations affecting multiple systems, so my CV/resume isn’t the most appealing to prospective employers, either.

I got a “last chance reminder” today from Hydro Quebec to pay this $1000 amount (for which I’m responsible for 1/3). In general, between this debt, my CC debt (which has been increasing each month because I can’t afford to pay it down to the maxed out level so it keeps incurring fees every few weeks), and my student loans, I’m totally at a loss for how to proceed. Do I contact a social worker? Financial advisor?

What should I expect in terms of collections/ being sued? HydroQC has my current address here in Ontario. I don’t have any valuable assets & am quite utterly insolvent but I can’t afford to hire anyone to help me figure it out. Does anyone have any advice at all, or know how I should best prioritize this so the stress doesn’t worsen my health? I really apppreciate it.
