Dopamine and Social Media
Understanding Dopamine:
Dopamine is a chemical in your brain that plays a big role in feelings of pleasure and happiness. It’s a part of your brain’s reward system, meaning it helps you feel good when you do something enjoyable.
Social Media and Dopamine:
When you use social media your brain releases dopamine. This release makes you feel good momentarily and makes you want to use social media more to keep getting those positive feelings.
Why It’s Addictive:
Over time, your brain gets used to the frequent rush of dopamine from social media activity. It starts to expect these surges of feel-good dopamine. When the brain gets used to these constant dopamine surges, it becomes less responsive to them. This means you need to spend more time on social media to get the same good feelings as before.
As you spend more time on social media for those dopamine releases, it can become a cycle. You might find yourself reaching for your phone and scrolling through social media without even thinking about it, just chasing that feeling of happiness or satisfaction. This cycle is a form of addiction because your brain has become reliant on social media for dopamine release.
After Stopping Social Media Use:
If you then take a break from social media, you might feel down or unsatisfied because your brain is missing the dopamine surges it got used to. But over time, your brain can adjust back to normal levels of dopamine activity, and other enjoyable activities will start to produce more noticeable dopamine boosts again.
