I imagine they were talking in the writers room and someone mentioned a bloody handprint on the wall, then one guy says 'can it have 6 fingers?' and everyone's like "WHY NOT!!!" throw it all in there.

I thought it was a reference the the hand glyph?
Deleted comment for anyone interested:
"It's the reference to one of Fringe cases."
That was my take too.
That was not a little thing at all...
Anyone notice anyother shutouts to the glyphs?
The butterfly's surrounding the one observer was another one.
That was a case though. Some guy hallucinated razor-sharp butterflies and fell from the building he was in.
Everything they used was a case, it was a huge callback to the past fringe missions over the last few series and it was fuckin rad
The 6 fingered hand wasn't a case...
That was something they saw, not something they used.
I see you watched the same "version" I did... Citytv
makes sense, canadian TV station, the show is made in canada.... eh
Oh my god.
That whole scene was just an amazingly awesome nod to the long time fans. It was like having your Fringe life flash before you with each little thing. Very well done.
Plus it was fucking badass as hell.
It reminded me of the scene from Cabin In The Woods. If you've seen it, you know which one.
I've seen it and I don't know which one :-( Hint?
When the guy and girl find the underground lab and break open all of the horror monsters.
