Surly Bridge Club (frameset) vs State Allroad 4130 Flat Bar (frameset)—I’m torn between the two

Surly Troll rider here. The Troll has been my single speed ride for the last seven or so years (by my count).

Looking for another do-it-all (or at least most) steel bike, maybe with gears this time. I commute and ride recreationally mostly on pavement, with some light gravel and hard packed dirt, year round. I’ve never seriously explored bikepacking/long rides, but it’s not out of the question.

I’m torn between the Surly Bridge Club and the State All Road flat bar. The Surly, I’d get without components and put my own on; the State, likewise: I’d remove the included components and put my own on.

I’ve read some people say the Bridge Club is rather on the slow side. I’m not looking for a race bike, but a good balance between comfort/utility, and some zip when warranted. I can ride fast when I want to.

Would likely run 2”-ish + inch tires. Would be using fenders, water bottle cages, maybe a rack and panniers, perhaps a frame bag.

Assuming the same components on either frame — which would you choose, and why?

Both seem like versatile frames.

Cheers!
